 Parker J. Pfister
"Creativity and Competition"

Being unique has its rewards!  In the fiercely competitive world of photography, one of the biggest challenges is to set yourself apart from the "other studio" in the eyes of potential clients.

Parker J will open DWF Convention 2007 by helping you set yourself apart!  He will show you ways to see things differently, discuss avant garde products, and reveal the joys of chuckin' that cookie cutter in the river.  Parker J will show you a style that's all his own as he entertains, enlightens and inspires you with his insights about photography as both an art and as a business.

Parker J is a photographer because he has to be.  He photographs for his soul.

His images have been described as fine art, photojournalistic fashion, and avant-garde. However they are described, one thing is for certain; they have soul. His images are not only seen by your eyes, but felt in your heart. Parker J's imagery has been awarded many times over, both nationally and internationally, and his images and interviews have graced the pages of Modern Bride, Today’s Bride, Rangefinder, Studio Photography and Design, Photo District News, and many other magazines and photographic books.

Paul F. Gero
Capturing Great Moments

Capturing great natural moments at a wedding takes planning, anticipation, and great reflexes. Paul will talk about some of the things that he learned working in daily journalism and now helps him make photographs that resonate with heart and soul because of their reality. These topics include:

  • Planning the Day's coverage -- suggestions on what to take and why.
  • Working the event -- figuring out the best places to be to make photographs with maximum impact and he'll talk about working with multiple cameras.
  • Working With Flash in fun and natural ways that help capture the feeling of the day.
  • Presenting the Work

This course will be aimed at the newer photographer who is looking to get a handle on documentary work as well as more experienced photographers who might be looking for a way to recharge their batteries and get back to making images that help feed the creative soul.

Documentary photographer Paul F. Gero has working professionally since 1983 when he started work at The Chicago Tribune as an intern. He soon was hired on staff and worked in Chicago, and later in the paper's Washington, DC bureau. In 1983, the Tribune nominated one of his photographs for the Pulitzer Prize and his work has won numerous awards regionally and nationally. In 1990 he moved west and became a staff photographer at The Arizona Republic in Phoenix. During his career he has freelanced extensively and has been published in magazines such as Sports Illustrated, Time, US News among others. Now based in Orange County, Paul documents weddings, portraits and does a limited amount of commercial work. He is the author of Digital Wedding Photography and teaches classes online at betterphoto.com and at Shootsmarter University in Aurora, IL and was recently appointed a Canon Explorer of Light.

Andrena Douglass & David Mielcarek
Don't Fear Your Lighting Gear

Available light is just not right for every situation. Mastering lighting can elevate the quality of your work and give you the confidence to generate consistently great images no matter what the environment. In this basic lighting seminar, Dina Douglass (Andrena) and David Mielcarek (DavidM) will show you how to light your way through a wedding day. Discussion will include use of transmitters and receivers, balancing exposure, single- and double-strobe lighting for indoor and outdoor formals, overpowering harsh sunlight, dealing with backlighting, how to use strobes to light the reception room, and use of strobes for late-at-night time exposure portraits.

Andrena Douglass (Dina) has parlayed her understanding of non-obvious markets into a wildly successful photography business in Los Angeles. Her business acumen and photographic artistry have enabled her to triple her prices in a few short years, and she has been able to carve out a competitive niche by differentiating her offerings via use of light and uniqueness of vision. Dina holds two degrees in journalism and spent 10 years working in knowledge management, marketing and writing roles for the world’s largest consulting firm and two Silicon Valley high-tech companies. She is currently working on a book featuring alternative female musicians.

David Mielcarek' s career in professional wedding photography started in 2002 when he joined a local studio as a photographer and post-processing specialist. He quickly realized his own creativity had to be unleashed, so he opened his own studio -- Catchlight Photography -- in June 2003. His effective use of lighting has set him apart from his competitors, and customers have been raving about his work since he shot his first wedding. He currently photographs 80 weddings per year.

Mythbusters:
Understanding the Foundations of Digital Imaging

Description: JPEG vs. RAW, resolution, 24 bit vs. 48 bit files, image file formats, etc. There are many “dry” concepts in digital imaging that the digital photographer must make decisions on. But how can he or she unless the foundations are clearly understood? Many photographers make the right decision, but they’re based on inaccurate reasons. They just got lucky. But many more make wrong decisions due to lack of accurate information. Tired of the misinformation? Then come join us and end the confusion. Get a clear understanding of these issues and make informed decisions for your business in this informing, yet entertaining seminar.

Michael Allen Greer runs Mike Greer Photography in suburban Detroit. While an engineer at the Ford Motor Company in 1987, his interests gravitated toward computer graphics and imaging. Freehand Album Design

Album Templates, particularly the excellent ‘Page Gallery’ by Yervant have positively revolutionised the way we make wedding Albums – no question.

But how do we set ourselves apart from other photographers using the same tools?

Free-hand Album design doesn’t have to be hugely time-consuming. Understanding specifics, applying basic design principles, using simple actions, making things clean is what this is all about.  David will discuss the shooting requirements to provide the construction choices, the initial design process, and conceptualising the final result – using  inkjet printers and– the ‘VellumOPUS’ project.

David A Williams is known the world over after lecturing in Australia, New Zealand, India, Phillipines,  America, and England. He's won over sixty awards for excellence in wedding and portrait photography, including the "Accolade of Lifetime Photographic Excellence" from WPPI in 2003.

Yervant
Digital Choreography with Yervant

"Finishing is paramount to perfecting an image."

Look at the work of Advertising, Fashion and Commercial photographers, it is readily accepted that they apply that 'EXTRA' digital treatment to perfect their images so to appeal and sell to the "consumer."  What about Wedding Photographers?? Yervant is presenting with an exciting program about 'Finishing' with digital techniques. He will do live demonstrations of 'Before & After' of numerous images and also work on some files from the audience to demonstrate his expertise.

The creator of Page Gallery album design software, Yervant has won countless awards, including WPPI 2005 “Album of the Year” 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes, and 1st Prize “Album of the Year 2005” from the AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photographers).  A longtime DWF member and contributor, his work is featured on the home page of the Digital Wedding Forum.

Yervant’s studio is located among some of Melbourne’s trendiest cafes, restaurants and fashion houses. The studio boasts a décor that is striking in simplicity and abundant with elegance. A large selection of wall prints and albums are on display, and the best cup of coffee is always waiting for guests.
