Someday, we'll see some competition in vendor-supported networks for the iPhone. But unless there's a hostile takeover or completely new business plan, don't expect it to be VZW. They currently only let you move data from your device over their network (hence their turning down Apple's initial offer- direct tethering to a PC? Hell no!) and take a pound of flesh for every MB.

Yeah, $55 does suck, esp when you're already paying $30 for the data plan for the iPhone itself. I pay $60/mo for a USB broadband card from them and it's ok...the service is generally fast but the card has been very troublesome, definitely doesn't pick up as good a signal as the iPhone, etc. Tethering with the iPhone has been much more pleasant...and if a call comes in, it seems to reconnect the data right away after you hang up.

The OS 3.0 jailbreak is now available and I'm sure we'll hear whether the old tethering options still work or have something new come out pretty fast: http://blog.iphone-dev.org/
