This design is from a recent High School Senior Album. These are great sellers in the studio and the clients just love them. And, frankly, we love designing them. In this first design I’ve placed one image full bleed on the left, and another image flush to the outer edge. (black keylines for representation only).
While I like this design, I felt like the middle space was a bit too much and the design felt just a bit too balanced. I then started to play around with the position of the right image just a bit. Here in this second attempt, I completely centered the right image on the right-hand page. Now, this was even worse than the first layout, in my opinion. Just way too balanced.
Finally, I moved the right image so it was halfway to the edge from the center. Now we are talking. I feel that this is the proper balance for these too images on the page. Now, time to find a nice background color to texture and get rid of that white. But that is another blog post all together.
So next time you are designing, don’t be afraid to move those images around a bit. It doesn’t hurt anyone and it can even be fun.

Sometimes when I get to a mental road block, I just start moving images around knowing they won’t look good where I move them- but also knowing that out of that brainstorming and randomness I often find a good combination that can be a good starting element for design.
