Trying to influence a decision? Embodied Cognition is a phrase you should know according the Journal of Science and Wired.
Philosophers, cognitive scientists and artificial intelligence researchers who study embodied cognition and the embodied mind believe that the nature of the human mindis largely determined by the form of the human body. They argue that all aspects of cognition, such as ideas, thoughts, concepts and categories are shaped by aspects of the body. These aspects include the perceptual system, the intuitions that underlie the ability to move, activities and interactions with our environment and the naive understanding of the world that is built into the body and the brain. I agree. Reminds of the time I heard Michele Celentano speak at WPPI of her “money couch” — it was so comfortable money just fell out of the pockets of anyone that sat on it.
The flip side however was the presenter I heard about that used paper proofs spread out on the studio floor, forcing clients to kneel to choose. He claimed that eventually the discomfort would cause them to pick faster and reject fewer photos, leading to a larger sale. To each his own…
Fascinating. Thanks for sharing.
Two other lines in the Wired story add more depth:
For those fearing exploitation by marketers, Ackerman noted that tactile suggestion’s effects diminish when people pay attention. “It’s when you’re distracted, thinking in a shallow fashion, that you get hit by these cues,” he said.
Ackerman said the connection isn’t one-way. “Once you have the connections, the process works both ways,” he said. “There is some evidence that you can change people’s sensations by changing their thoughts.”
