I’ve bought it and this thing rocks. For anyone looking to help them with album, print or package pricing needs this app.

So what is this new app you have?

This app is called PhotoPrice, and it helps photographers figure out what they are making on what they are charging.  In the retail world there is a suggested retail price on clothing, shoes, etc. but I have found that it’s always been confusing to photographers to not have some sort of guideline.

Where did you get the idea?

Well once PPA (Professional Photographers of America) came out with their benchmark survey for what helps keep photographers in business long-term we finally had some research to base our prices off of.  Despite how awesome this data is, I felt like if people had it in a usable, easy fashion they would understand how to benefit from it a little better.

I always had these calculations as part of my strategy avenue DVD set in an excel spreadsheet, and then my buddy Fundy (that’s me) suggested I make an iphone app with the information.  Its been a long road tweaking it and making it perfect, and I am so excited to make it finally available to the general public.

What is your philosophy on pricing?

Charge as much as what your clients will pay, without going below a minimum floor of a price based on your costs.  And always pay yourself first!

Would you agree that most photographers under-price their work?

I do, I think that many people price themselves based on what others in their market are already charging, which is really bad for business.  Who knows if those photographers are making money and now you are both in the same boat.  By having information about your costs and how that effects prices, you are empowered to grow your business into all of your goals and dreams.

What advice would you give to photographers on creating packages?

I think its great to create packages with items that have both a significant cost (like albums) as well as items that don’t have a lot of costs involved but are highly valued by the customer (like DVD slideshows). This will lower your overall package COGS.  Also always include enough so that the  customer feels like they are getting great value, but leave plenty of room for upgrades in the event they love their photos (which they will!) and are inspired to purchase more.

Here are some screen shots. I highly recommend going to her site and buying the app for your iPhone or iPod Touch. It’s only $4.99 and I pinky promise that you’ll make your money back with your first sale with your new pricing.
