Ir⋅rev⋅er⋅ent
- not reverent
- manifesting or characterized by irreverence
- deficient in veneration or respect
What an awesome word, irreverent! But even better is satire which is just oozing from the pages of the Studio Ugly blog in their post “How to become a rock star wedding photographer“. Some will shout, holy truth batman! Some will be offended and others will walk away having had a good laugh. Of course I’m by no means endorsing the name calling (and the article certainly does point fingers) but I really think there is something we can learn by reading all of this sharp tongued wit.
6. Develop a style that emulates the work of every other rock star photographer. Try to be like everyone else who pretends to be happy and successful.
The point being, how easily we as an industry are fast to follow who or what’s hot rather than to create our own path to success? Don’t get me wrong there is much to learn by attending workshops, seminars and conventions but we should all come home ready to whip up our own recipes for success. Integration rather than emulation could be the key to achieving your own success.

Party on dudes! Be sure to take some time off from chillin’ with the groupies to let us know what you think below in the comments section.

LOL!
Yes, Yes and YESSSS!!! LOL!!!
Yes the article does have its funny moments, but I think it’s really awful for whoever runs that site to call out individual photographers like they do, especially because some of the things they accuse them of are blatantly false (such as Jessica Claire being new to photography, when she’s been in the industry for 10+ years and been extremely well-known for over 5 years). It’s one thing to poke fun at the industry at a whole, which I’m sure we’ve all done from time to time, it’s another thing to anonymously attack specific photographers.
The thing is Mark, by posting it here and talking about how hilarious it is and encouraging other people to read it, you ARE endorsing it. I think that’s really unfortunate, especially since some of the photographers attacked were or are DWF members.
That said, I do agree with your overall take from the article, that people shouldn’t just blindly take the advice they’re given from “rockstar” photographers and should learn to think for themselves. Actually I agree with a lot of the stuff on the Studio Ugly site, I just wish they wouldn’t have made it personal and petty.
