If The Street is correct someone just took a big juicy bite out of my Macintosh tablet dreams. In an exclusive interview they claim that they rumored Apple Tablet will contain a Qualcomm chip and that chip would be tied to Verizon. That in and of itself is not so bad but if their numbers ring true I’m definitely turned off on the mobile data plan front
- $800 if you buy from Apple sans data plan
- $600 if you buy from Verizon with a two-year data plan at $60 per month
Let me repeat that… $60 FREAKIN DOLLARS a MONTH! Doing the rough math that’s $2040 for a tablet with a data plan and I wouldn’t bank on the rumored dock being included in that price. I’m sure the device will have wireless built-in which means most of us won’t need that insanely priced Data Plan but still…
What do you guys think?

I think we wait and see . . .
I agree with Ray.
I also don’t see why this is being touted as if it were a giant cell phone. It’s a computer. why should it have ties to a wireless phone provider? strange
Nick I agree. Cool that it has a 3G option I guess but for $60 they are smoking crack IMHO.
Watch, if it takes off it will lead to bandwidth caps and higher rates for 3G phone users. Nostramarkus said it first!
$70/month for two years plust the cost an iPhone itself = $1880. So, at just $160 more you get a tablet computer and a more reliable network.
You could also get the MiFi mobile hotspot and use it with all of your wifi-capable devices rather than paying for a separate data plan for each device.
Nick, it’s tied to a wireless phone provider in the same way a bunch of netbooks are now.
I think if it can replace my phone, then $60 a month is well worth it since the iPhone plans are so ridiculously high.
And with VZW, you can bet your arse you’ll see bandwidth caps, and massive overages charges.
Its the iPad. Look forward to finally seeing it!
Jake, I guess it’s different in Canada.. all we have here are smartphones being exclusive to some providers. in fact, even the iphone is available at all 3 big wireless providers in canada. But I have yet to see a netbook or such device tied to a provider. sure, they have USB sticks that access their networks, but those can be used on anything. hmm
Just rumors so far. It all depends on it’s intended use. If it’s competing with the Kindle as a book/document reader than $60/month is really going to be turn off compared to free. It’s hard to imagine carrying a phone, a tablet and my laptop and hard to imagine replacing my laptop without a real keyboard. Time will tell.
If the rumors are true I would probably get it for the unsubsidized 800.00 price and only use it at wifi hotspots that way no data plans required. Have wifi at home/studio and Qwest DSL gives me all the At&T hot spots for free.
