Is the new song the same as the old song? It seems the wedding mills are on the move, in and also out these days.
New York’s Queens Bridal Center, Inc, is going to be coughing up $250,000 in restitution for swiping brides’ cash in exchange for promises of photography and videography services they knew they’d never deliver, since the company was in the process of filing for bankruptcy. However, much like the hydra, while one wedding mill bites the dust, three more rise in its place.
First we’ve got “Studio Blue,” Bella Pictures’ solution for brides too cheap to hire Bella itself. Recently launched, Studio Blue promises even lower prices than Bella. No word on what they’re paying their photographers or how they’re finding them (suggestion: soup kitchens and park benches).
If that weren’t bad enough, a recent DWF Pro post brought to our attention “GO portraits,” location portrait and wedding photography from none other than Sears. That’s right, now you can get yourself a new washer, dryer, Craftsman screw driver, and your wedding photography at the same store. Talk about one-stop shopping!
But it doesn’t stop there. Another DWFer noticed that now, Wal-Mart, yes, Wal-Mart is offering service from the same company for around $500.
Question…how do you get overseas sweatshop labor to shoot a wedding in Des Moines?

Unfortunately the wedding photography profession has been relegated to a sub par low esteem profession. This was something that was predicted five years ago and now it is here.
With the current economy, brides are having smaller and less expensive weddings and sacrificing quality in all areas.
Any wedding photographer who fails to adjust to the new wave, will be left in the lurch. If you are a high end shooter, your client base will be easier to maintain. For all others it’s dog eat dog.
Low entry points due to cheap and easy digital has created this monster and it’s here to stay. Yes digital has given control to the photographer, but it has allowed amateurs to enter into the profession and lower it’s reputation among the public. The lines have been blurred.
