Over at “A Practical Wedding“, Meg set out a challenge to her readers: lay out their cold, hard wedding budget, but with no names. The idea is that by not using names, people can be more honest, more ruthless about what they spent.
The idea was not to brag, but just to lay out the numbers. And it’s an eye opener to be sure, but it’s about what you’d expect. Some people who valued photography spent a lot on photography, some people who don’t, didn’t.

I found so much of this commentary depressing. I wholly understand budgets but at the same time almost every line after “Photographer” is friend or professional who gave me a “Huge Discount.”
With only 2-3 of the commenters spending more than 3K, I had to wonder how many photographers are going to be able to make their health insurance premiums this year? Are we dealing ourself out of a middle class living filled with luxuries like dental care and oil changes?
We need a reality show: Lifestyles of the fabulous and destitute photographers
I also had to laugh when one girl commented on contacting a photographer in DC “who started at 8K!!!” You know, no one goes to a Mercedes dealership and is shocked when at car is 50K. She obviously has Mercedes taste and a Toyota budget (I’m sure we are all guilty of this at some point, but you can usually predict when you will be window-shopping).
I wonder if that blog is very representative though, isn’t that a DIY site more or less?
