Filmaker Jesse Rosten has apparently decided that LCD Litepanels were too expensive, so has set up an array of nine iPads as a light source for a recent model shoot. Personally, if I’m going for DIY light panels, I’d prefer, say, fluorescent lights from Home Depot for $30, but to each his own.
Watch the video below, and read Jesse’s thought on the shoot and see some photos here.

Sorry but the whole production looks cheesy and foolish. What a waste of time. Not practical or useful. Not even fun to watch.
What a complete waste of money to achieve something so easily produced. The ipads cost more than the camera he’s using.
Well, I loved it. Apple must love it too. I appreciated all the effort and creativity that went into actually making the idea work. I would love to be part of such a creative group. Shooting for the sake of shooting…and creating something original. Good job! BTW, what are you now going to do with all those iPads!
I think the situation is “You find yourself needing lights, but don’t have anything but a bunch of friends with iPads. What can you do? Of course, having nine of them is a bit ridiculous (which he himself admits), but the idea is to get people thinking outside the softbox.
Guys, you’re missing the point.
Techno geek stuff doesn’t really have to make sense, or create great visuals.
The pro would have had the set up, shot, struck, and on his way to lunch before the first frame with this arrangement.
1/60, f1.4 at ISO800 from about 1.5 feet…… LOL!
I am a photographer, of course I love creative stuff. I learn a ton watching hundreds of videos on the net. The point is (..and we do not miss the point)Techno Geek or whatever, being creative does not mean being useless. What did we learn from it? ZERO. Nada.
That’s not thinking out of the box. This is “oh, I will also do something with MAC product because all the “Cool” photographers do”.
Here is a guy that has in his disposal about 10 people and money to spare. If you have it, donate. (That would be a short and sweet video: “I thought of doing blah blah blah but decided that the $6,000 it would cost me to produce it could be better used to help other instead of boosting my ego”.)
Just a thought…
Something like this is not done to teach something or for a reason. It’s done “Just for the hell of it” and for fun.
Well thats not what the opening paragraph says. It says Filmmaker Jesse Rosten found LCD panels too expensive so he set up nine IPads as a light source for a recent model shoot. It doesn’t say he did it for shits and giggles.
Mark, It’s become obvious to me, that you are into all the techno geek stuff, and that’s cool. For myself, *form follows function*! I value good design which works well – often through the specific design. Though aesthetics are nice too. I believe others may feel the same hence the less than glowing response to this application of technology.
