The coffee table is the center of any living room: a place for conversation, gathering, and storage. The photo album preserves memories, giving life to past events and emotions. Remembrance combines the social interaction of family gatherings with the nostalgia and enjoyment of remembering
the past. Instead of acting as a liaison
between the user and their entertainment,Remembrance becomes the source of
entertainment. It creates new memories while simultaneously cataloguing and cherishing old ones.

Yup you hear me right. Adorama is teaming up with Photographer David Bergman and Tourphotographer.com to cover Bon Jovi.

Press Release Blurb..

New York, NY (February 23, 2011) – Adorama (www.adorama.com), America’s premier photography and consumer electronics reseller, announces today they are the exclusive partner with photographer David Bergman’s TourPhotographer.com to print and fulfill Bon Jovi’s Live Tour 2011 concert photos and photo books. http://www.tourphotographer.com/

Bon Jovi fans will benefit from professional photographer and official Bon Jovi tour photographer David Bergman’s unprecedented all-access pass to the band. Loyal fans can purchase a unique and professional commemorative photo book from each show on the band’s 2011 concert tour across the United States and Canada. The books contain exclusive behind-the-scenes photos taken backstage and on stage at each and every concert by photographer David Bergman and are produced by Adorama in New York. All of the images offered are personally approved by Jon Bon Jovi.

“It’s an honor and a pleasure for me to photograph Bon Jovi, the band that was

last year’s highest grossing concert tour, every night. Jon Bon Jovi has

personally granted me better access than he’s ever given to a photographer

in all his years as a rock star. I can go on stage during the show and even

walk into the dressing room and shoot pictures of the band,” said photographer

David Bergman. “Thanks to the great folks at Adorama, I can allow fans to see

what I see on stage and backstage. In addition to traditional prints, the photo

books I’m producing from each show are a unique souvenir that the fans have

never been able to get before.”

“We are so excited to offer Bon Jovi concert goers the best photographic souvenir possible,” said Brian Green, Vice President of Marketing, Adorama. “It’s no doubt that a great time has been had at the show, but most fans do not get great photos to remember seeing their favorite rock band perform. Now with the Bon Jovi Live Tour 2011 photo books filled with one-of-a-kind images created by renowned photographer David Bergman and produced by Adorama, fans can have professional photos of the band taken during the concert they attended either as prints or in a keepsake book they will surely treasure.”

Dear 2009 Summer School Alumni:

This summer’s program is going to be a kick! Okay, I admit it. I’ve said that every year, but I was right, wasn’t I?

The complete schedule and list of instructors, along with registration is now live at www.mei500.com. If you missed last year’s program you’ll probably enjoy the short video Clay Blackmore produced on the site. It’s fusion technology at its best!

Thanks to input from past attendees, this year’s program has more hands-on time, actually more instructors and we’ve made the open forum program that was so incredible last year an actual part of this year’s event. We’ve also moved the program to the Mirage Hotel. The Mirage recently completed a multi-million dollar renovation. The rooms are nice and there’s a $79 special rate for Summer School attendees. Plus, the Grand Ballroom is a fraction of the distance away from the sleeping rooms, making it more accessible without the MGM’s five mile hike to the Conference Center.

We’ve got a great lineup of instructors with terrific diversity in the programming and some new sponsors. As always our goal is to give you the support you need to grow your business, fine tune your skill set and recharge your battery! Plus, as an alumni, if you attended either or both of the last two Skip’s Summer Schools here’s your opportunity to save a lot on this year’s tuition!

Bring a friend who’s never been to Skip’s Summer School and you’ll receive a rebate of 50% of your registration cost, $140! or,

Bring two friends who have never been to Summer School and you’ll receive a full rebate of your registration cost, $279!

Your rebate check will be waiting for you when you pick up your badge at the registration desk on July 31st.
To Qualify:
1) You must have attended one of Skip’s Summer Schools over the last two summers, 2009 or 2010, and be registered for the 2011 program.

2) Complete the Alumni form and include the names of your friend or friends who are coming this year, along with their addresses, phone numbers and email addresses. Email the form to info@mei500.com. The form can be downloaded at the Summer School site at www.mei500.com.

3) All attendees, alumni and friends, must register online and be paid in full by July 20 to qualify. (Please note: Easy Payment Plan participants do not qualify.)

4) Each rebate check will be made out to the Alumni.

5) Limit of one rebate check per alumni.

6) Cancellations disqualify the rebate.

7) Program subject to change/discontinuation.

Whether you’re bringing a friend or not, you definitely should register early. The demonstration/hands-on programs will be limited to 50-70 people. There are eight different programs with some of the finest instructors in our industry. You have a choice of three different programs to attend. All the other programs will be classroom style on Sunday night, Monday and Wednesday morning. We also have a room block reserved at the Mirage, but I suspect that will fill up relatively fast as well. Make your reservations early, so you don’t miss the special rate.
This year’s program is going to be another outstanding event, filled with great information, giving you the ability to build your network, expand your skill set and new tools to grow your business! If you have any questions about this program please send me an email and include your phone number. I’ll do my best to answer you quickly!
See you in Las Vegas!

Gotta say right up front that I was a little thrown by the fact that David "Strobist" Hobby's name appears nowhere on the front of these books..

Gotta say right up front that I was a little thrown by the fact that David “Strobist” Hobby’s name appears nowhere on the front of these books, and that Strobist has become a brand and not, you know, just some guy and his website…

Instead, the “author” (if indeed you could say these books are “written” is Zeke Kamm, editor of Nice Photography Magazine and editor of the Trade Secret Cards series. In fact, if you’re familiar with the latter, the first “book” is going to seem familiar to you, as it is the first series of Strobist Trade Secret Cards, rebranded, repackaged, and republished with the help of Peachpit Press. If you have the original Strobist series, all this new series does is make things prettier. The second volume is all new images, write-ups and lighting diagrams. For folks round here, the second volume focuses on portraits, and might be more applicable than the first, which adds in cars and carrots and paper clips and forks.

Here’s how they work. Each book is a collection of 25 postcards. Each postcard features an image on the front, and a lighting diagram and 200 word description on the back. And in total strobist tradition, the first image of the first book isn’t lit with a strobe at all, but a $20 hardware store light.

At $25, these are not cheap, and the text-to-dollar value is quite low. But the value of these books is not in sitting down and reading them. That’s for other books. The secret to these books is to actually sit down and do try these techniques. These are lighting formulas, written in big block letters for you to follow. So go. Do. Play. Rip out one of the pages (and you know that hurts me to say, bibliophile I am) and go and recreate the shot. Make it better. Figure how to do it, then figure out how to do it better.

You can grab Volume 1 and Volume 2 from Amazon. And if we haven’t mentioned it recently, these books are supplied to us by the publishers for review purposes.

Does it really all come down to what is aesthetically pleasing to the human eye? How do we know what is pleasing? Isn’t that just a little subjective? Oh, this rule of thirds, you say?

Last month I visited Celebration, Florida, which I am amused to report, was an excellent example of a unified and visually balanced little town. It was calming to stroll around, without any wonky vernacular architecture. Who am I kidding? Give me a little variation. a little spice. A little heinous paint job. I’d take New York, LA, or Naples over this any day. So too much unity, too perfect balance isn’t interesting.

Within the frame, within any composition, balance is addressed. There’s the literal weight and visual or implied weight – at least that’s what we are dealing with in 2-d – the implied weight of line/color/shape/etc. In general terms we’ve got symmetrical balance and it’s counterpart asymmetrical balance.

A great way to look for unity and balance in your images is to rotate them upside-down. Do they still look good? Does it balance on it’s head? Is the image too heavy on one side? The Top? The Bottom? I also will rotate album spreads to check for proper balance and proportion frame to frame.

I shook her hand in NYC in October at PhotoPlus Expo and I haven’t even washed it yet. Ok… Ok… I’m kidding about the not washing thing but I’m not kidding about being a big fan. So when an opportunity arose to sponsor her 2011 tour we jumped on the chance.

Even better? She’s on tour with the one and only Jerry Ghionis! This is one you won’t want to miss.

The Victoria and Albert Museum is collecting photographs of wedding fashion for an upcoming show. Fashion you say? Who cares…

Well as a photographer, I’m not so much into the fashion myself but I do enjoy looking at the old photos. It’s a collection of bride, groom and family portraiture dating back to 1840 effectively spread across many different cultures. So in their quest to document bridal fashion the museum has accidentally created a brief narrative on wedding photography. I like it!

In advance of an exhibition of Wedding Dresses in 2013 we are creating a database of photographs of clothes worn for weddings from all cultures between 1840 and the present. We include civil partnerships. This database will provide a rich record and help people date their own photographs.

To ensure we build a useful historical record all entries will provide the year of the event and the names of the bride and groom or partners. The place and the religion of the wedding will be included if possible. We would like you to upload up to three photographs showing the fashions at any one wedding and the principal image should focus on the detail of the wedding dress (or partners’ clothes).

What do you guys think?

The ghosts of photography past, hidden mothers aren't always hidden so well.

Let’s rewind to the 19th century when taking a photograph required a great deal of effort on the part of the photographer and a good bit of patience on the part of the subject as well. Now imagine you’re trying to photograph a fussy young child… The words “Doesn’t end well” comes to my mind.

Enter simple solution, wrap mommy in some cloth and pretend she is a chair then crop her out with a matte or frame. Problem solved… well maybe not as sometimes you are left with a fairly eerie looking “Hidden Mother” tintype where the mothers take on an almost ghost like persona in the photo. CREEPY!

Have a look at the Hidden Mother tintype flickr gallery for even more examples of this bizarre form of mommy avoidance photography.

I’ve always wanted a photo collage on my office wall but I dreaded the thought of mixing and matching different frames and sizes so that’s probably why Plywerk instantly appealed to me. A simple, clean and slightly more green way to display my work and even better… it won’t break the bank. Especially since they offer pro discounts.

Plywerk panels come in 35+ different sizes, are available in Bamboo and Maple and utilize a keyhole slot on the back for easy hanging.

The bamboo plywood is ¾” carbonized vertical grain bamboo. Bamboo is a grass and its fast growth makes it a very sustainable material. The maple plywood is a cabinet quality ½” solid birch/alder core with maple face veneer.

Both the bamboo and maple plywoods we use are FSC certified to ensure the material is manufactured using environmentally sustainable practices.

If you’re into photojournalism and or “real” lifestyle portraiture Glen is one of those artists who’s work you should become familiar with.
