According to WebProNews and Bloomberg CNN President Jonathan Klein is afraid of social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.
The competition I’m really afraid of are social networking sites. That’s an alternative that threatens to pull people away from us.
Such is the power of twitter and Facebook that they can scare one of the largest news and media providers on the planet. If the President of CNN is scared what does that mean for all of the other information providing sites in existence. You know, sites that effect our industry, like the Knot, WeddingWire, Martha Stewart Weddings, Grace Ormonde etc etc etc..
The fear they have is that people are shifting their trusted sources for information and media.
The people you’re friends with on Facebook or the people you follow on Twitter are trusted sources of information. . . . Well, we want to be the most trusted name in news. We don’t want the 1,000 people you follow in Twitter to be the most trusted sources for you. . . . So I’m far more worried about the 500 million people on Facebook than I am about two million people watching Fox.
If you’ve been in business more than 3 years you know that bridal news and informational portals are not what they used to be in terms of providing a return on investment for photographers. This is very, very, very thought provoking if you ask me.
Maybe the news anchor brands he references in the following video aren’t as important as he once thought they were back in December of 2008.
The times they are a changing and we want to know “What do you think?”.

Social networking sites don’t provide up to date news….i don’t see the comparison. Unless the sites start adding news and world event information, peope will continue to use to easily socialize with each other, but it’s no replacement for news organizations.
You’re kidding right George? Twitter and Facebook beat the major news network EVERY time now. Their info is first and fresh and from real people experiencing it.
When the earthquake hit Chile I was watching twitter update and news reports from people roll in… including images and videos being posted by people who were actually experiencing it. There was no images or video out of there for almost 24hrs on the news stations.
Ditto when the accompanying tsunami was to hit Hawaii. The news stations had the same stuff on over and over and over while I was reading what people were saying. You know the people who were experiencing it.
Will it replace news stations? NO will it change how the news is reported. Hells yeah! If anyone thinks otherwise they are very much mistaken.
Mr. Klein did not become the president of CNN by not understanding his industry. I’m sure he understands it quite well and if he’s worried about diminishing trust and following due to social networking then that’s saying something. As a former newsie myself I can totally see how this is a game changer.
People who don’t feel that social networking is changing the way information is spread around the world to the point that it will soon hold majority control are either old or fooling themselves.
Wow, are they finally waking up? Like you, I receive news first through blogs/facebook.
I never get my news first from the internet. There are still a lot of people who do not live on the internet. I don’t wake up and the first thing I do is check my pc…..I don’t own a blackberry…i guess some people live on the internet 24/7 with no lives.
Um yeah… welcome to the new world where we are connected 24/7. Hell my TV is connected to the internet now. I stream music in my car over a 3G internet connection.
Those who aren’t connected 24/7 will soon be a minority. If they are not already.
You don’t get your news from the internet and I’ve never had a subscription to a newspaper. I haven’t purposefully watched a TV news program on a regular basis for probably over 5 years now.
Everything I need to know flows right to my internet connection while I’m doing other things and yup it starts when I pour a cup of coffee in the morning and ends at night when I place my phone on charge.
NOW to say that someone like me has no life would be a GROSS case of ignorance. I do quite a bit with my wife, my two kids and my dog even with the internet in my pocket.
How long has it been (if ever) since CNN has been a truly credible news network, anyway? It’s no MSNBC, but it’s still pretty low in the ratings for a reason.
Interestingly enough I find that social networking sites are bringing back that long lost social strata formerly known as “community.” The face and platform has definitely evolved from the front porch to the newsfeed on facebook, but people are staying connected like never before and relying on first-hand accounts of events that are unfolding literally in real time.
The fact that the news media can’t keep up is no surprise, the delay is too great. But since the sense of “community” is also narrowed down to the “who you know” category, I don’t foresee the news becoming totally extinct in the near future. I still turn it on at night to get a summary of information from the variety of sources they pooled to make a story.
That being said, while big business may live in fear as the Twitterated Facebook world looms larger every day, the flipside is that social media networks are a boon to small business- an industry that thrives on more than communication…small business is about relationship, and relationship is the definition of social networking!
