Get and Stay Organized
First let me say that there is no reason to reinvent the wheel here. Any of these tips can be implemented during your next cup of coffee. It might seem obvious to some that we should all be keeping the best examples of our work and copies of our glowing praise in a central location but… I’m pretty sure that not everyone does this. Scratch that… I know not everyone does this because I hear grumbles each time someone tells me about having to update their websites.
As photographers, it’s in our best interests to stay current but something in our right brained minds turns this task into an uphill battle. Every time we go to update our online presence, need an example of our work or have to dig up a testimonial we have to go digging thru thousands upon thousands of files and emails spread all over our hard drives. Having your “Faves” and “Praise” centralized in one location just makes sense.
Here are some tips that have helped me stay organized and made my photography life a bit less random…
Save Your Favorite Images
- Create a favorite image folder (Do it… do it now!)
- Take 5 minutes and build a Photoshop action which saves a copy of your current file to that location
- Add a shortcut to your favorites folder to your Dock or Taskbar. This will allow for dragging and dropping outside of Photoshop.
Save Your Client Testimonials & Praise
- Create a testimonial folder in your email client
- Forward or copy any “I love your work” type emails to that folder
- You could go a step further and setup a rule that triggers when the word “testimonial” (or some other code word) is found in the subject line and then email yourself snippets from your blog comments or your Facebook wall. The rule would then save them to your testimonial folder.
Save Photos of Your Albums
- As part of your photo album quality control process force yourself to take photos of each album you do. Just a few quick standard shots will do. Hell use your point and shoot if you must but take the damn photos.
- Store these photos in a central “Images of Albums” folder.

Thanks Mark. Making a folder right now!
that’s so true. I had this problem so many times. Finally I managed somehow to go around… Thanks for the post!
To keep up with my favorites, I label them 5 star while editing so that later,in bridge or lightroom, I can simply filter my files by rating to get to my favorites from each shoot.
I use the program OneNote to organize EVERYTHING, including client testimonials.
