It’s no secret amongst the DWF membership that Australia’s own Vanessa Hall is the queen of color. By now she’s has to have the world record for shooting more brides in non-white dresses. It’s her “thing”.  When Vanessa posted the photos of her “Blackish” dress session I knew that I wanted to share them with everyone so here they are for your viewing pleasure and as an added bonus we’ve republished our exclusive interview with Ms. Hall as well. In Vanessa’s own words…

a dress that had overlays of black!! YUM!!

DWF – Let’s start off with a little bio, tell us a little bit about yourself.

VANESSA – I am a wedding/portrait (with a few other jobs in between) photographer in the suburbs of Melbourne. I have a home based studio on an acre there and have built an outdoor studio on part of my property. My indoor office/studio space is not that big (wish it was bigger) but you work with what you have. I try to limit the weddings I do to keep things personal and not too big as I still have a family to care for as well. I have been apart of the DWF family for nearly 5 years and I am quick to say that without them I don’t think I would have grown into the photographer I now am and that I will always keep learning from the group and continue to grow. With attending and speaking at 2 DWF conventions (I wish I could get to more!) I have grown as a photographer more than if I was not part of this group.

DWF – How did you become a wedding photographer?

VANESSA – Well while still at school I was taking my photos to be developed at out local studio (being in a very small town in New Zealand) it was a 1 stop shop/studio and when I just turned 17 got offered a dream job to work there. While on a holiday in Australia I met up with a studio owner who offered me a job over here in Aus at 1 of his studios and within a few months at the age of 20 was managing 1 of his small studios. Things then from there snow balled to where I am today with now my own business and with no formal training have had to teach myself along with many seminars and workshops.

DWF- Who or what inspires you as an artist?

VANESSA – Girls in coloured wedding gowns!!! hehe those that know me know I get my more than fair share of those! Of course many members on the DWF also inspire me as well, but too many to name.

DWF- If we needed a photographer today why would we book you? What makes you unique?

VANESSA – You surely need to book me if your wedding gown is coloured! LOL Otherwise I cant pin point what how or why..many say it is my calm nature (but maybe they haven’t seen the REAL me! hehe) and to be able to capture so much in a very short limited time span. Maybe I should research that more (note to self).

DWF- If you had to pick a favorite “Tool of the Trade” what would it be? and why?

VANESSA – Hmmm fav tool????? A coloured wedding gown!!! Ok you mean gear wise huh?? That would have to be my holga..just love the old world feel, but my main tool is my D700′s love the way they cope in such low light..(as I dont like to use flash at all)

DWF – How about some final words to live by?

VANESSA – Lets ditch the white strapless wedding gown and make a coloured gown the new white!
