After months—or was that years?—of waiting, the Radiopopper Cube is being released Monday May 3.
The Cube hits the store at 1 pm PST, and will sell for $29.95. Want to know more? You’ll have to wait until they flip the switch, at which point in time they’ll have tonnes of information online, including the Cube manual.
Folks using the JrX Studios with Alien Bees have been able to remotely control the power of their flashes ever since the JrXes were introduced. Now, people with “Canon and Nikon compatible, dedicated TTL flashes” and a set of JrXes will be able to control their speedli(gh)t(e)s remotely.
So, let’s see. That’s the Einstein, the Pentax 645 D and the RPCube in one month, effectively knocking off three of the longest anticipated bits of gear in one month. April has indeed been a good month for gear hounds.
Now if I could just figure out a way how to hack the cube to work with an old Vivitar 283….

does the changing output feature only work with TTL? what if i wanna use manual output?
You need a TTL capable flash, but, if I understand it correctly, you are exerting manual control over the flash using that circuit, dialing power up or down remotely. Having not used one I’m not sure if you set the flash to TTL or manual for the RP cube to work.
Looks kinda rectangular if you ask me.
but goddamn am i psyched!!!
Raymond: I’ve seen people who know more about the actual workings of these confirm that you set it to TTL, but you’re exerting manual control over it.
Ricardo: You’ve been a photographer too long, you’re thinking two dimensions. A cube is when you extend the square along the hypothetical Z-axis, creating a three dimensional object, known as a “cube” or a “frinkahedron,” in honor of its discoverer.
I’ve made a couple of my own DIY RPcubes and RPcables (for flash units with a sync port). To answer the questions posted, the flash unit needs to be set to TTL mode, but you are manually controlling the power level using dials on the RadioPopper transmitter.
This official RPcube looks huge compared to my own and the others that are now available from flashzebra.
