According to PDNonline the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics to William Boyle and George Smith, the inventors of the first digital sensor.

While it was not their intention to be the fathers of modern digital photography this duo have done just that with their invention of the CCD (charge coupled device). Our hats are off to both men as they split the $1.4 million dollar award for their hard work.
