After reading that DYI set of instructions, I bet you could replace the eyelet with a thinner version and just use your quick-release plate to hold that end of your camera strap on.
That would look more professional, let you have the strap on all day through formals, and no snag on any bit of fabric that bolt would come into contact with.
Just a thought.
