According to Akirou Mitsui, president of the Joint PhotoImaging Enterprises Association International women can be thanked for rescuing the camera industry during the current economic situation.  Women have overtaken men as DSLR camera purchasers and are now the primary user of the camera’s in most households.  The industry overall has seen a shift from a few years ago when the boys on the high end vastly outnumbered the girls, but the ladies are gaining ground.

Calm down boys!  We aren’t out to get you.  We’re here to play.

The double edged sword of this is more people overall trying to crack an industry where the apparent profit margins are not what they seem.  People are also underestimating the amount of time and education that the business will require.

From the girl’s view (at least this one’s) terms like ‘Camera Gal’ smack of demeaning tags meant to keep the glass ceiling intact.  Camera Grrrl is marginally acceptable, but if you are a man addressing a lady with gear probably best to not to use either.
