In one of those “interesting, but how does it affect me?” moments, Canon has applied to get the .canon top level domain.
The Wired article linked above offers some interesting options (like a Jim@canon email address), but more importantly is ICANN’s proposal to open up generic top level domains (gTLDs). While it won’t make much difference to you if Jim has an email address at Canon, you might be interested in being you@yourdomain. (That’s a period, not a dot.)
For me personally, I think it would be great if people could contact me at trent@eyefordetailphotos. (Again, period.), but with a application fee of $185,000? No thanks.
So, in the end how does this affect me? It doesn’t, but it is interesting.

That could be pretty fun.
Certainly a little less than 200k isn’t much for a big company, but it could become a little confusing if more companies would follow. Now add subdomains and the google results pages get a real patchwork look
