Forbes has released a report with a breakdown of the potential economic impact of same-sex weddings.
While the added spending would boost our industry overall, same-sex couples spend, on average, 34% of what straight couples spend. When spending categories are ranked, gifts top the list, followed by reception and catering, with photography way down the list.
There are ways for wedding photographers to approach this. If you want to produce revenue in the same-sex marketplace:
- The 66% discount for same-sex couples
- Small packages
- Create your own suggested wedding budget worksheet with percentages for each wedding expense. Put “Photography” in bold, and give it the healthy percentage it deserves. 10? 15? 20%?
Why not give budget breakdowns to all of your straight couples? Be ready to answer WHY you gave photography the percentage you did.
