How many years have you been in business? 3

Was there life before photography or has this been a lifelong passion for you?
I have loved taking photos and looking at photos for as long as I can remember. It wasn’t until my brother lost his 6 closest friends in a car accident that I realized the impact photography has on peoples lives.

How did you become a professional photographer?
I thought about going to school for photography when I was in high school, but my Mom shot the idea down and said it wasn’t a stable career. When I was in my early 20′s I made the decision that I would rather take the chance of failing at something I loved, then succeeding at something I hated. Plus, after all my Mom is a stockbroker- not exactly the most stable career either ;) So I spent a solid year reading every photography book I could get my hands on. I’ve been buying bridal magazines since I was in elementary school, so wedding photography made sense.

What’s been your biggest business challenge? How have you faced that challenge?
I think like a lot of people, the biggest challenge has been an over saturated market. Too many photographers, not enough jobs. I’ve remained positive about my business, and am continually educating and bettering it, and it’s definitely helped.

What’s the most effective way you’ve found to market your studio?
Word of mouth and Facebook. If you don’t have a Facebook fan page, I think you’re missing out. It allows us to showcase our businesses, and get our clients involved which is the best kind of advertising, and best of all – it’s free!

If we needed a photographer today why would we book you? What makes you unique?
I’m not in this industry to get rich, I’m in it because I genuinely love capturing peoples beauty and bringing the best out in people. I think it shows and that’s why people book me. Though being rich would be a nice bonus ;)

What is the one item used in your shooting or editing workflow you can’t live without? What makes it indispensable?
My 5d Mark 3. I love it so much that my 5d mark 2s are collecting dust. Its high iso capabilities make it perfect for wedding photography.

What advice would you give to an aspiring photographer?
Practice, practice and then practice some more. You need to know your camera inside and out, and be able to perform under pressure. This business is anything but easy, so if you’re solely looking for some glamourous ‘rockstar’ lifestyle, you’re better off taking up acting.

What has the DWF done for your business?
The DWF has been key in helping me continually educate myself. I’ve also met some amazing people from it, like Jerry and Melissa Ghionis.

How do you use the DWF?
As a wedding photographer, I have no co-workers, no one to vent to and ask questions when I need help. DWF is my office, and all the great people on it are the closest thing I have to co-workers. The search bar in the forum is invaluable, and keeps me entertained for hours looking through old threads.

Optional, but come on, be a sport: If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
Super speed! I would be way more productive, and get my editing done way faster ;)
