It doesn’t get much more candid than this. Working professional photographers discussing the elevation of some photographers to “Rock Star” status.

This is your chance to weigh-in on stardom and photography. But let’s keep it civil, no punching below the belt.

Ever wonder, “How’d they do that?” well wonder no more. Strobox shows you how they did it with detailed lighting diagrams.

The Problem

Lighting is one of the key factors to consider when taking a good photo. And even though we all know a great shot when we see one, it’s often difficult to understand just how it was lit. Until now, photos didn’t come with details of the lighting scheme.

Our Solution

Strobox is a place for all types of photographers to share how they set up that amazing photo! The easiest way to learn is to look at photos and their lighting diagrams so you can see for yourself how they were created.

Goal we are hoping to achieve

We believe in sharing knowledge. Strobox is designed to do just that—provide a space for photographers to share and learn professional lighting techniques. Our hope is that everyone can gain insight into the great work of contemporary top-class photographers from all over the world. When you learn something, we’ve done well.

I say, way to go Strobox and thanks for the cool looking resource!

Is it really the end of a once respected lineage? One wedding photographer/Nostradamus seems to think so.

I was out and about on the big ole WWW searching for interesting discussion about our industry when I stumbled on this SEO Press Release by a forlorn photographer playing prognosticator. It predicts a possible end to industry, an ending that results in skilled professionals leaving the industry.

Pamela says, ‘there’s no telling what wedding photography will be like in 10 years time. Will there even be a market who pays a professional to document their special day? Another photographer says ‘I might as well pack up and leave now, accept the fact that even though I am a professional and have been for over 15 years, I will no longer work full time as a photographer’.

Excellent I thought, another Chicken Little running about predicting the end of an industry as we know it. I browsed on…

Then I found this post, on of all places a POKER FORUM! A poker player (slash would be wedding photographer) uses the worst math I’ve ever read to justify a career change because…

…it seems like a pretty awesome job

Fair enough you say, it is a pretty awesome job but where does the whacky math come in? This delusional young man uses the kind of math that ingores overhead, advertising, operating expenses and my personal favorite… The IRS!

Like, if the avg wedding photographer makes $1,500 let’s say, then, even doing just 1 wedding a week, you’re already making 75k a year, which is pretty incredible for only having to actually go to work 1 day a week (plus it’s not in an office or anything…

Oh bfactor (that’s his forum name) I hate to point a finger at you but you’re clearly one of the current problems in our low cost of entry industry. You’re the non-business minded, who believe that picking up a camera can make you rich in a rough economy. But I digress, maybe these posts really are a sign of the pending wedding photography apocalypse.

What do you guys think?

Using psychology to upsell clients the stuff they already want.

I have heard photographers brag about pushing clients to make a decision at consults, right there in front of them, without the couple discussing it. I don’t think selling wedding photography is like selling cars. You are probably going to replace your car several times over your life. A couple goes in to a marriage with the idea that they are going to do it once. On the other hand I have felt that there were some couples that would have been happier with me than who they chose, and that my inability to close the sale sent them to someone whose work they didn’t like because the photographer “outsold” me.

Last year I decided to learn how to sell myself. I wanted to learn to show my potential clients the confidence I have in my work and products. For that I turned to my right. That’s Hubby’s side of the bed. We shoot together, and when we aren’t shooting he has the same old 9 to 5 job he’s had forever and he’s good at it. His customers trust him and keep coming back. He sells hobbies, which are far less necessary than photography (don’t tell him I said that). He listens to what the customers want first. He finds out what their needs and budget are and presents them their options. It’s deceptively simple, but highly effective.

Since I am extremely biased when it comes to him I share with you this article The Psychology of Commitment and Getting Customers To Spend More. It will give you tools and advice on ways to present your product (yourself), upsell, and have your clients leaving happy and coming back for more.

One of my favorite techniques is to meter off of the face and then to back light. I have built a career on this. Just let the background go, and you can get some really amazing shots.

More soft bounced front light off of another building. I always look for really soft lighting on the face and never have the light spilling across. Flat lighting sells and sells big!

So the next time you are setting up a shot and the light is spilling across the face, do anything but side light!

Exclusive New Kit Features Black PEN E-P2 Body, Black 17mm M.Zuiko Lens and Black FL-14 Flash

CENTER VALLEY, Pa., August 31, 2010 – In the past year, the Olympus PEN family has won a series of high profile awards, including the CEA CES Innovations Award, the EISA Best European Camera and the Red Dot Design Award. Today, meet the newest member of the world-renowned family: the Olympus PEN E-P2 black-on-black kit. For the first time, the PEN E-P2’s stylish retro black metal body is complemented by a black M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 17mm lens and a black FL-14 flash in an exclusive, limited availability kit.

Look what you can do with a PEN E-P2 kit. Just like the original, it blends high-quality still images like those taken with a Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) with High Definition (HD) video, stereo linear PCM audio recording and In-Camera Creativity inside an ultra-portable body.

“The PEN E-P2 kit’s edgy black styling gives the camera a discreet, more professional look. Perfect for photographers who want to capture the action without being a distraction,” said Katie Roseman, product manager, Olympus Imaging America Inc. “Photo enthusiasts will appreciate the camera for its excellent image quality, HD video, creative functions and high-end stereo sound, while design aficionados will relish its sleek black profile.”

The powerfully simple PEN E-P2 is compatible with an array of Micro Four Thirds lenses, including the newly announced M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 75-300 MM F4.8-6.7 and M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150MM F4.0-5.6, which feature a high-speed, silent autofocus during still shooting and HD movie capture. It is part of a new generation of system cameras.

The black Olympus PEN E-P2 kit will cost $999.99 and will be available at select photo specialty stores beginning in October, 2010. The kit includes the PEN E-P2 Body, black M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 17mm lens, black FL-14 flash, USB Cable, Video Cable, Li-Ion Battery Pack, Li-Ion Battery Charger, Shoulder Strap, OLYMPUS [ib] software CD-ROM, Manuals and Registration card.

World’s Smallest 600mm Telephoto Zoom Lens and 80-300mm Equivalent Lenses Deliver Both Extreme Portability and Optimal HD Movie Recording

CENTER VALLEY, Pa., August 31, 2010 – Olympus today announces two new lenses to its Micro Four Thirds lens family: the M.ZUIKO® DIGITAL ED 75-300 MM F4.8-6.7 and M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150MM F4.0-5.6. Both lenses feature a high-speed, silent autofocus during still shooting and high definition (HD) movie capture. They are the ultimate lenses for zooming in on sporting events, beautiful wildlife and faces from a distance, and because they make barely a whisper when focusing, they won’t call attention to photographer or add unwanted noise to movie recordings. Look what you can do.

Strong Zooms
The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 75-300mm f4.8-6.7 with a 35 mm equivalent of 150-600mm is the world’s smallest and lightest 600mm super telephoto lens. Weighing merely 15.17 ounces and measuring 2.76 by 4.57 inches, this lightweight lens delivers excellent portability and outstanding image quality when paired with the award-winning Olympus PEN® cameras. Previous lenses offering 600mm or more have been too large and heavy for most users to enjoy super telephoto shooting. This lens is smaller and lighter than the comparable ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 70-300mm f4.8-6.7.

The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150mm f4.0-5.6 is extremely light, weighing only 6.7 ounces. With a wide zoom range with a 35mm equivalent to 80-300mm, this lens offers versatility and portability. It’s an affordable complement to the powerfully simple 3x wide-angle zoom lens (M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14-42 f3.5-5.6) that comes standard with the PEN kit.

Silent Operation
The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 75-300mm f4.8-6.7’s rear focusing mechanism is comprised of a single-element unit, to enable remarkably fast and nearly silent HD movie recordings with sound. The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150mm f4.0-5.6 has two lens elements in the rear focusing mechanism. The manual focusing mechanism is designed to deliver quiet and precise auto focus operation, for an affordable, high quality means to capture your life in still images or HD videos.

The new lenses are made with ED (extra-low dispersion) glass to maximize the performance of the Micro Four Thirds System. The Micro Four Thirds System standard meets the telecentric requirements of dedicated digital design. Light rays strike the imaging element nearly head-on for optimum edge-to-edge image reproduction. It also enables much more compact design than the Four Thirds System standard (or other interchangeable lens systems) because it reduces the outer diameter of the lens mount by 6mm, and the distance from the lens mount to the sensor (the flange back distance) by approximately half. As a result, M.ZUIKO DIGITAL Micro Four Thirds System lenses offer uncompromising professional quality for capturing both still images and HD videos, and the lenses are exceptionally compact to make capturing life more fun.

The Micro Four Thirds System’s design, compact size, low weight and amazing image quality with the new lenses extend the photographic potential of the system by adding more options. The new lenses are compatible with all Micro Four Thirds System Olympus PEN cameras, and all other current and future cameras that comply with the Micro Four Thirds System standard. When mounted on an Olympus PEN camera, the lenses are stabilized thanks to the camera’s in-body Image Stabilization system and offer effective shake compensation at all focal lengths.

AVAILABILITY
The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 75-300mm f4.8-6.7 will be available in December 2010, while the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150mm f4.0-5.6 will be available in November 2010. Both lenses will be available in black and silver.

U.S. Pricing / Product Configurations
M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 75-300mm f4.8-6.7 Estimated Street Price: $899.99
M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150mm f4.0-5.6 Estimated Street Price: $299.99

Awwww… ain’t it cute! For real though, isn’t this just the most awesome little DSLR of all time? My credit card is in my hand.
What to do with a grimy, hairy mouse?

I have a ginourmous and impressive looking Wacom tablet. I have had it for about 3 years. This morning as I was shaving the mouse I had the thought that I hoped no one saw me shaving the mouse. Then I wanted to tweet to see if anyone else felt that way. Then I realized that there may be some of you out there that don’t even know what shaving the mouse would mean and I would have put myself directly into the “someone saw me through the window” scenario I was trying to avoid. So for the benefit of the portion of mankind who uses these products I will share with you my experience.

Having inherited my father’s oily skin my tablet can get a bit dirty. The oils from your skin transfer onto the tablet, along with dirt and create a lovely sheen that then transfers to the felt pad under the mouse. This creates friction and pilling and makes the mouse behave in an undesirable manner. I personally take a paper towel with a tiny bit of mild multi surface cleaner on it, wipe down the surface, then shave the bottom of the mouse with the cheapest disposable razor available to man. I then wipe down the felt with the same rag I used on the tablet and I’m good to go.

I checked the Wacom site for cleaning instructions, but have the attention span of a gnat, so ended up using a web search to come up with these other helpful sites for tablet maintenance.

The 60D has finally been announced, and I'm glad I didn't wait.

For a few months, I struggled. Wait for the new 60D, or pick up a 7D. The rumoured 60D had a lot of cool features, if the rumours were to be trusted.

Finally, I got tired of waiting and grabbed the 7D. The 60D has finally been announced, and I’m glad I didn’t wait.

Don’t get me wrong. The 60D does have some impressive features, and in some ways (audio) is better than the 7D. But in many ways, Canon seems to be retooling the XXD line away from the prosumer market towards a high-end amateur market.

Here’s the good stuff:

articulated LDC Screen

HD Video

In-Camera RAW Processing

Better audio control for video

Here’s the bad stuff:

Video only in program and auto

More plastic, less magnesium

SD Cards

There’s a pretty peppy discussion happening on the boards (sorry, need to be a member to read. On the other hand, first week is free…) around the new camera, and the general consensus seems to be that this is not going to be the right camera for wedding photographers.

Anyone thinking about getting this as a backup? Anyone planning on using one of these for shooting weddings? Or are we all going to wait until someone gets their hands on one and can end all this speculation and wild accusations about things we have no experience with?

Anyway. Here’s the full (and very long) press release:

Canon’s New EOS 60D Digital SLR Camera Unleashes The Creative Potential Of Digital Photography And EOS Full HD Video With New In-Camera Imaging Features

New EOS 60D Offers a Vari-Angle LCD Screen, EOS Full HD Video Recording, In-Camera RAW Processing and Creative Filters and 18-Megapixel Resolution Among Class-Leading Specs

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., August 26, 2010 – High-quality digital capture and skillful post-processing go hand-in-hand for superior end results, and more control over in-camera image processing means less time editing and more time shooting. At the same time, the overwhelming popularity of Full HD video recording with other current EOS Digital SLRs has led to customer requests for more advanced features such as manual audio level control and flexible LCD screens. Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, delivers all of these features and more with the new EOS 60D Digital SLR Camera. For the first time on an EOS camera, the EOS 60D DSLR boasts a three-inch Vari-Angle Clear View LCD screen, EOS Full HD video recording with manual overrides including audio level control, and in-camera functionality for RAW image processing plus Creative Filters to manipulate images after taking them. Designed primarily for advanced amateurs, the EOS 60D replaces the EOS 50D and boasts a broad array of new features that make it easier for photographers to add personal creativity to their images. Whether it’s capturing an overhead shot on the Vari-Angle screen at a graduation ceremony, or converting a color image to black and white for a nostalgic look, Canon is delivering in-camera features and functions that empower advanced photographers to capture, display and print the images they want.

“The EOS 60D has been designed to offer the image-capture and the Full HD video features customers are looking for as they continue to expand their photographic skills. The exciting new features of the EOS 60D make using a DSLR camera more attractive and easier than ever before. We want everyone to experience the great image quality a Canon DSLR can offer with features and functions that they will appreciate and use,” stated Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A.

Exciting EOS “Firsts”

For the first time in the history of the Canon EOS System, the new 60D camera features a large Vari-Angle 3-inch Clear View LCD screen with 1,040,000 dot/VGA resolution plus anti-reflective and smudge-resistant coatings for bright clear viewing from any angle. The new LCD screen is ideal for composing low-angle or overhead shots whether capturing still images or Full HD video clips.

Another first for the EOS system is the EOS 60D camera’s new Multi-Control Dial, which places a Multi-Controller and Set button inside the Quick Control Dial. This new control layout streamlines camera navigation for vertical as well as horizontal shooting and enables a cleaner camera design. Responding to customer requests, the EOS 60D also features a locking mode dial, which makes camera operation more secure by preventing inadvertent changes to the photographer’s selected shooting mode.

While the photography mantra of “get it right in the camera” still stands true, Canon’s new EOS 60D gives advanced photographers an edge with new in-camera features that enable users to enhance their images without a computer even after they have been shot. For the first time ever in an EOS camera, the EOS 60D features in-camera processing of RAW image files, new reduced resolution image copies, and post-processing creative image filters for exceptional flexibility in digital image rendering.

In-camera RAW image processing features include Picture Style, White Balance (WB), Color Space, High-ISO Noise Reduction, Peripheral Illumination Correction, linear distortion correction and chromatic aberration correction. These powerful in-camera editing tools will allow photographers in the field to produce optimized images on the spot and generate JPEG files at various resolution and compression settings for immediate sharing, without affecting the original RAW data.

Another great new feature for photographers-on-the-go is Canon’s new image resizing function. After capturing full resolution or smaller JPEG images, the camera can generate lower-resolution copies using menu commands. New lower-resolution settings include 1920 x 1280 for optimal display on HD televisions, or 720 x 480, ideal for immediate uploading to social networking and other photo sharing web sites. The original high resolution files remain unaffected by the image resizing function.

Available for the first time in an EOS camera are Canon’s new creative image filters. Familiar to Canon PowerShot users, these fun photo effects help make a great image more dynamic, even after it has been shot. Canon provides four artistic filters that allow photographers to capture an image and then create and manipulate a digital copy of it.

Each of these filters can be applied to a captured still image in-camera to create a second “filtered” JPEG version, leaving the original RAW or JPEG file unaffected.

Another addition to the camera’s Live View function is Canon’s new Aspect Ratio feature whereby the Live View screen can display cropping lines for 1:1, 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratios in addition to the standard 3:2 ratio. These cropping lines make it easier to compose images in Live View, and they can help to expedite printing when using Canon’s supplied Digital Photo Professional software. Custom aspect ratios are also applied to JPEG images whether captured directly in-camera or created with the EOS 60D’s in-camera RAW image processing function.

EOS HD Video: Continuing the Video Paradigm Shift

In addition to its new still capture capabilities, the EOS 60D features Full HD video capture at 1920 x 1080 resolution with selectable frame rates of 24p, 25p or 30p. Native 24p recording helps videographers achieve a more cinema-style look for their footage without the need for post-processing. The EOS 60D builds upon the great video capabilities Canon has introduced in recent DSLR cameras and packs them into a camera photo enthusiasts will love. Full HD video capture, along with selectable cinematic frame rates for both NTSC (National Television System Committee) and PAL (Phase Altering Line) standards, will help the EOS 60D to be the camera of choice among film students and photography students alike.

The new EOS 60D camera’s movie mode also includes manual controls for exposure as well as manual audio levels in 64 steps, much like the latest firmware update for the EOS 5D Mark II HD-SLR. Users can set audio levels on the rear menu screen before shooting begins; once recording is initialized, audio adjustments are not possible. In addition, Canon has added an electronic Wind Filter to the audio controls within the movie shooting menu.

Canon has also included an in-camera movie editing feature, allowing users to shorten a video file by clipping segments from the beginning or the end, removing unwanted portions without outside software. This feature can dramatically accelerate workflow by reducing the time needed to upload video clips to a computer for further editing and assembly. The EOS 60D also includes Canon’s Movie Crop mode, which allows users to achieve 7x magnification when shooting SD video. Unlike the digital zoom feature found in many compact digital cameras, Canon’s Movie Crop mode crops the image directly from the CMOS sensor at full SD resolution to preserve image quality and still provide additional telephoto power.

Providing access to the right lens for any given shooting scenario, the EOS 60D DSLR camera is compatible with more than 60 Canon EF and EF-S lenses. The EOS 60D DSLR’s video functions are supported by two key proprietary Canon technologies, a DIGIC 4 Imaging Processor and a large APS-C–sized CMOS sensor capturing fine detail and color with an amazing cinematic depth of field. The Canon EOS 60D allows for three video recording modes – Full HD and HD in a 16:9 aspect ratio and Standard Definition (SD) in a 4:3 aspect ratio, all at selectable frame rates. The EOS 60D Digital SLR camera will record Full HD at 1920 x 1080 pixels in selectable frame rates of 24p (23.976), 25p, or 30p (29.97); 720p HD recording at 50p or 60p (59.94) and SD video at frame rates of 50p or 60p (59.94). The EOS 60D features a dedicated button to initiate live view for both video and still shooting. Once engaged, the same dedicated button will start and stop video recording.

Valuable Additional Features

Along with the adjustable LCD screen, the new EOS 60D DSLR features a class-leading 18-megapixel Canon CMOS sensor, a proprietary DIGIC 4 Imaging Processor, a 9-point Autofocus system and Canon’s exclusive iFCL Metering System (Intelligent Focus, Color, Luminance) giving it the power of a professional-level camera. Capable of capturing fast action, the 60D DSLR can shoot full resolution still images up to 5.3-frames per second (fps). The EOS 60D records its images and video clips to the photographer’s choice of SD, SDHC or new extended capacity SDXC memory cards.

The 9-point AF system on the new EOS 60D features f/5.6-sensitive cross-type focusing on all nine focusing points. Like the EOS 7D, the center AF point is a hybrid of standard cross-type and special diagonally-shaped “X” cross, with high-precision sensitivity for f/2.8 and larger aperture lenses. Complementing the AF system, Canon’s iFCL metering system, identical to that on the EOS 7D and Rebel T2i, takes color information into account and includes a 63-zone dual-layer metering sensor that reads both illumination and color for consistent results in all lighting conditions, keeping exposure levels stable from shot to shot, even as the light source changes.

Photographers will enjoy shooting in low light thanks to the EOS 60D DSLR’s wide ISO range from 100-6400 (adjustable in 1/3-step increments from ISO 100-6400 and expandable to 12,800) allowing it to capture beautiful images without flash during family milestone events such as wedding ceremonies, while still being equipped with a built-in pop-up flash for shooting the cake cutting ceremony and reception. The EOS 60D’s pop-up flash features a built-in Integrated Speedlite Transmitter for control of up to two groups of off-camera EOS Speedlites without the need for an external transmitter, providing an economical solution for multi-flash shoots.

Making accurate composition more convenient, the EOS 60D’s optical viewfinder provides 96 percent coverage along with Canon’s built-in single axis Electronic Level Display, which utilizes the exposure level scale below the picture area to let the photographer know when the camera is level. The Electronic Level Display is also visible on the camera’s LCD screen in both Live View and Movie modes. An artificial horizon display illustrates horizontal roll, allowing the photographer to know when the camera is in a fixed level position. The entire camera has been durability-tested to 100,000 exposures making the EOS 60D a reliable as well as a powerful imaging tool.

Pricing and Availability

The Canon EOS 60D Digital SLR camera is scheduled to be delivered to U.S. dealers toward the end of September, and will be sold in a body-only configuration at an estimated retail price of $1,099.00i. It will also be offered in a kit version with Canon’s EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM zoom lens at an estimated retail price of $1,399.00ii. The Canon BG-E9 battery grip is scheduled to be available toward the end of September and sell at an estimated retail price of $270.00iii.

Sure we all expose differently from each other, but make sure you are exposing yourself the same every time.

One of the best business practices is consistency. It isn’t enough to shoot one awesome wedding a year if you are shooting 19 crummy or half a*$ weddings per year. People want to know what they can expect and want to know that they will get what they expect.

I stalk lots of photographers online, not in a creepy way, but in a what-are-they-up-to way. One of the areas where I have noticed a great deal of inconsistency is exposure. Back in the olden/golden days of film I took photos, dropped off the rolls at the “good” lab and they all came back looking pretty good. The lab was responsible for my post process and one of the things the lab took care of was making sure my prints looked like each other. The color and exposures were as close to each other as possible. If the prints looked off from each other or as a whole I could ask the live person at the lab why and they would give me advice on exposing the film for next time or if it was a problem on their end they would reprint it.

Now most, especially newer photographers are handling or have handle post process themselves. What I see going out on blogs and social network are groups of images that don’t match and would look terrible on the wall together. I’m not even talking about those who use 5 different actions on one set of proofs, I am talking about images that need tweaks (or even a great deal of work) on the white balance and exposure. It doesn’t matter if you proof un-retouched photos, then fix them later. If you are putting images out for public consumption make them look good on their own and in the larger group. Clients and potential clients will like them better and other photographers won’t judge you. As much.

Worth the price of admission (and the drive)

One of the awesome things, ok the only awesome thing about working at a computer most of the time is that when the email comes in, when the contest gets posted, when the product gets launched you are there to swoop in and get it. That’s how I get my free stuff. In March I went to WPPI courtesy of a free pass I won from Finao, I have an RS-W1 that I won on Photo Sister, and this week I got a free pass to the WPPI Road Trip in Sacramento courtesy of Asuka Book.

When going to a day long seminar like WPPI Road Trip you must keep in mind that one speaker will say something, the next speaker will contradict it. Film is dead, film is not dead. Fusions is pointless, Fusion is the best thing that has happened since the camera obscura. Some speakers will drop tasty morsels such as “get all the good shots you can,” (yes, he really said that), other speakers will inspire you to explore a whole new world you never considered. They have a fun little trade show where you can pick up your registration fees worth of coupons, savings, and giveaways. There were door prizes and raffles, and some of the speakers gave away prizes.

On balance I think it would have been worth the drive and price of admission (if I had paid), AND it includes free registration to WPPI in Vegas. Besides you might win a big prize. I did.

There are 8 cities left. Visit the WPPI Road Trip website if you want to go.

We just had the opportunity to shoot the coolest wedding couple ever. Let me explain.

This couple hired us to shoot them wandering about town, shooting whatever we wanted to shoot. At the end they wanted an album. That was it, a complete editorial wedding shoot! No formals, no uncle Bobs, just shooting them however I felt like!

The thing that this couple understood, was that I have a certain vision. They had seen my work in the magazines and didn’t want to tie me down with their own ideas. They knew that to get the best out of me, they should let me play to my strengths. The basically just trusted me!

In the end I know that these clients are few and far between, but wouldn’t be a joy if we could all educate them and only shoot the ones that our styles meshed with? Unrealistic in these financial times, but one can always dream. The great thing, is that she is a talker and I know that all her friends will know about us.

Just passed through my RSS feed. Dave Cross, Photoshop Guru and Photoshop Guy, just referenced one of the stories here on DWF. How cool is that? That’s almost like the time where Scott Kelby sent me that email saying that legally I wasn’t allowed within 500 ft of him and to stop calling him at home at three in the morning.

Anyway. Dave mentioned this story, as a lead in to his own encounter with law enforcement. In his case, it went radically different, though.

…the officer says, “What are you taking pictures of?”. As my mind races, thinking about those harassment stories, I find myself becoming defensive saying ”Nothing Really. Just looking for interesting things to photograph. Haven’t taken many photos actually”. He gets closer and after a brief pause he says, “Well you might want to check out City Hall – it has won awards for architecture and it’s a really interesting spot to photograph.”

You can check out how the story ends over at Dave’s blog.

Does anyone have any tips for cleaning drool off a keyboard? I have been a longtime Sigma 8mm user. Not because I love Sigma but because it was the best 8mm fisheye out there and it worked on Full Frame cameras. I literally cannot wait to hold this red-lined piece of bubbly 180 degree L glass in my hands. My favorite ability…

When paired with Canon’s full-frame DSLR bodies, such as the
EOS 5D Mark II or the EOS -1Ds Mark III, professional photographers can choose to capture circular or full-frame fisheye images, allowing them to view a scene in a completely new and unique way. This new level of choice provides enhanced creative flexibility when shooting scenes such as the night sky, where the full 180º horizontal and vertical fields of view (FOV) allow every detail to be captured with incredible clarity in one single image.

Here’s the skinny:

London, UK, 26 August 2010 – Canon today unveils the world’s first fisheye zoom lens offering both circular and full frame images, thanks to an extreme wide-angle focal range of 8-15mm. Replacing the

EF 15mm f/2.8 fisheye, the new EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM is the latest addition to Canon’s L-series range of professional lenses, providing outstanding image quality, constant aperture throughout the zoom range and a robust design for reliable shooting in challenging weather conditions.

When used with EOS bodies featuring APS-C or APS-H sensors, the

EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM produces a more traditional, full frame fisheye view. A zoom-lock mechanism on the lens body allows the range to be limited to the focal length that ensures the best possible full-frame view without unsightly vignetting around the edge. ‘C’ and ‘H’ markings can be found next to the zoom operation ring, indicating the wide-angle zoom position where vignette-free shooting is possible with either sensor, allowing photographers to achieve optimum results with any EOS body.

Advanced optics for professional imaging

The EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM showcases over 70 years of Canon’s optical engineering heritage, boasting 14 lens elements in 11 different groups, including one aspherical and one Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) element to correct chromatic aberration and produce high-quality, high-contrast shots with excellent colour reproduction.

Ghosting and flare caused by strong light sources can be a particular challenge when shooting at such a wide angle, and, in order to counteract these artefacts, all lens elements have been covered with Canon’s Super Spectra Coating. The inner surface of the front element also features Canon’s SubWavelength Structure Coating (SWC), which uses tiny cone-like structures, shorter than the wavelength of visible light on the surface of the lens element, to gradually slow light down until it is at the same speed as it travels through glass, removing the risk of flare occurring before the light reaches the sensor.

To maintain optimum image quality, the front and rear lens elements also feature a Fluorine Coating which actively repels water, dust and dirt, making it easier to clean the lens and leaving it unobstructed by particles.

Fast, accurate focusing and low light performance

The ultra-wide angle zoom of the EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM offers a fresh take on sporting action or architecture shots, while the constant f/4.0 aperture allows faster shutter speeds to be employed for natural-looking images in low light.

A ring-type ultrasonic motor (USM), provides quick and accurate focusing when shooting and enables a full-time manual focus functionality allowing photographers to adjust the focus of any shot, even when the AF system is activated, for even greater control over image capture and improved creative flexibility.

Built for professional performance

The EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM features a high-grade physical design that reflects its elite performance. High resistance to both dust and water enables it to be used in a range of challenging situations, and, when used with a professional EOS body, it allows continued shooting in the harshest weather conditions. The external design also features the new exterior texture, for a high quality look and feel indicative of all new

L-series models.

High quality accessories

The EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM is supplied with a dedicated lens cap, lens pouch and a felt-lined lens hood EW-77 for use when using the zoom at the 15mm setting, preventing lens flare.

LAS VEGAS, APRIL 12, 2010 – Anton/Bauer®, a Vitec Group brand, and the world’s premier provider of batteries, chargers, lighting and other mobile power systems for the professional broadcast, video and film industries, will debut its groundbreaking battery, the DIONIC® HCX, at NAB 2010 (Booth C6025). With a 120 watt-hour capacity and a brand new motion detection sensor that protects against capacity loss, the DIONIC HCX is the company’s latest addition to its successful DIONIC series high-current battery line.

At NAB, Anton/Bauer will unveil the DIONIC HCX’s most exciting feature: its unique, built-in motion detection sensor. After a two-week period without a load, the DIONIC HCX automatically goes into “deep sleep,” significantly reducing self-discharge and allowing extended storage with nearly zero capacity loss. To “awaken” the battery for normal use, customers need only move the battery, thus activating the motion detection feature and as a result, “wake up” the battery. This new motion detection feature significantly increases the overall life of the battery by mitigating lithium-ion battery self-discharge when the battery is not in use. Anton/Bauer also has plans to integrate the DIONIC HCX with its signature Anton/Bauer Battery Management System (AB-BMS), which, in the future, will allow users to program the inactivity time length prior to the battery “going to sleep,” further allowing the customer to tailor their battery systems to their specific needs.

“We’ve spent many years innovating new, powerful and advanced solutions for our customers, so it’s no surprise that we’re debuting one of our most exciting product developments during our 40th anniversary year,” says Michael Accardi, president, Anton/Bauer. “With the addition of the DIONIC HCX, we now have more solutions than ever for our customers, across many different battery chemistries. Whether our users are looking for a powerful NiCad, lithium-ion or nickel metal hydride solution, they know they can count on us to equip them with the best solutions for their needs, and that we’ll be there to help them make the smartest choice.”

With the growing demand for high-current batteries compatible with today’s power-hungry camera equipment, the DIONIC HCX is a lightweight yet powerful solution for camera crews. Weighing just 2.4 pounds (1.09 kg), the DIONIC HCX is capable of withstanding high instantaneous current draws in addition to 10 amp sustained current draws. The DIONIC HCX can power a 40 watt camera with a 20 watt light for over two hours – making it the perfect choice for users working with on-camera lighting applications requiring a high current draw.

In addition, the DIONIC HCX offers an enhanced LCD RealTime® fuel gauge. Users can now quickly and easily check their run-time, with the display showing up to nine hours of run-time when used under low-power load conditions. The new LCD display clearly indicates remaining run-time and battery capacity, showing the number of hours available with a seven segment display surrounded by arcs indicating 15 minute intervals. A battery “gas gauge” indicator also shows remaining capacity in 20 percent intervals underneath the remaining run-time indicators.

The DIONIC HCX is an ideal high-current power option for users working worldwide. Though any battery with over 100 watt-hour capacity is classified as a Class 9 hazardous item with rigorous restrictions on transportation, the DIONIC HCX registers under the 160-watt capacity prohibited for air travel. Thus, DIONIC HCX users can bring up to two DIONIC HCX battery units on board both domestic and international airlines – a major benefit for camera crews traveling anywhere for a shoot.
