i use this trick all the time and it works like a charm. you have to go to a special desk at airport check-in where they will inspect your bag with you in the room, seal it, and send it down the the special tracked line. the extra tracking is the best! i normally pack body, main glass, CF, and flash in carry-on (basics i need to shoot) and check back-up gear and less "necessary" items...with a Rossi .357 revolver - cuz why NOT roll like Dirty Harry!? check the airline website as there are special instructions for the handling of guns and ammo in the same baggage!

If I had enough gear that I'd have to check it, I definitely would. For now, all of my optics, my main flash, bodies, camera accessories fit in one carry on, and it's a backpack to boot!

Btw, would a cap gun do the trick for this? With some special metallic paint, you might be able to do the trick for cheaper.

BRILLIANT!!! I may actually do this...

though I do think this might not work for international flights... ie: Mexico you can NOT enter that country with a weapon... and England might be off limits as well?

seriously though, I'm gonna give this a go!

I'll be going to Paris this May and was thinking of "carrying on" my camera equipment. Is this not so smart? I'm only bringing my 5D two lenses a Contax and lens and a couple of backs. Buying a starter Gun does sound fun though.
