Full props to Gary for trying to prevent gear theft but I’m not sure how useful the GearGuard Locking Lens Cap will be to the average photographer. In situations where gear theft is a concern (say your run of the mill larger city wedding reception venue) can you just imagine having a huge daisy chain of lenses you’d have to go thru in order to swap out?
Watch the intro video below and let us know what you think of the new gear GearGuard lens cap system. In the video Gary shows how strong the cable is by using a pair of cutters on it. Looking at the photos it appears as though the cap is made of plastic. I don’t know about you but if I’ve got a pair of snips and I’m faced with cutting a steel cable or a small plastic loop that the steel cable is threaded through I’m cutting the plastic loop…

Wait, seriously, is he doing a promo video in PJ’s and with a BT in his ear?
Yes, because thieves can’t possibly have anything beefier than a pair of hand held cable cutters when they get all your kit home……
Where do I get my money back on my Gary Fong attachments
Um … if those lens caps are indeed plastic, you can hand me that daisy chain and I’ll have all the lenses off of there in under 60 seconds. What are you supposed to do, wear the cable over your shoulder while shooting with all your lenses clanking around? Or are you supposed to hook them all together while they’re in your bag and just hope that any would be thieves take the time to carefully inspect the contents of your bag before running off with it? I don’t think it would deter theft on a technical level, but it might keep anyone from getting near you while wearing all your lenses on a pretty necklace, out of fear of catching The Crazy.
