According to industry peeps in the know. The major hard disk drive manufacturers ramped up production of their 2.5 inch laptop sized drives this year and didn’t allow for growth in the 3.5 inch hard drive market. Duh!
Blah blah blah, geek speek, what does this mean to me you ask? It means that we can expect to see both a rise in HDD prices and a scarcity of the most popular models as well. You know those big and fast ones all the photographers like to use. So go forth penny pinchers and grab an end of year hard drive bargain for ye know not where your next drive might be! Read more about the hard drive shortage to come.
If you are actually going to go shopping for a 3.5 inch internal hard drive I highly recommend the Western Digital Velociraptor (which is a 2.5 inch drive in a 3.5 inch sleeve) for Speed and performance and the Samsung Spinpoint F1 for image storage. I have a few of each and love them to pieces.

I love the Windows 7 Explorer box.
That’s vista.
It’s one of my systems.
What do you think a velicoraptor is? Its a 2.5″ drive!!! it just has a case around it.
Maybe you have one of the older models which were 3.5″ but WD is moving them to 2.5″
Lots of servers are going 2.5″ too due to space constraints.
Finally if you want speed for your Photo work use SSD!
Peace!
My bad Alberto, you are correct I forgot about the mounting sleeve.
No issue man, what do you use to transfer images from your CF cards to your PC?
That seems to be my major slowdown, I’m going to grab a firewire 800 CF reader…. I hope that works!
