An article at CNN.com about the rising costs of healthcare plans for small business in the US (no snarky comments from our Canadian and European readers, please) should remind you as a small business person to ask yourself, “when was the last time I shopped around for a better plan?”
Here’s another question: The last time you DID shop for a plan, wasn’t it fun torture? At least when you shop for clothes, the mall has an Apple store, and a cool pretzel joint.
The CNN article focuses on a guy who runs an auto repair shop- but his problem is one familiar to photographers who get health insurance through their studios: Every year the cost of the plan rises by 10-20 percent, forcing the owner to spend valuable time and energy shopping for a better less expensive health care plan. Question # 3: Sound familiar?

I am currently just shooting part time, but I had my own real estate appraising business not long ago and when I did I had my own health insurance, but it was what the guy called catastrophic insurance. It didn’t pay anything up to like $5000 per year, but then it paid 100% up to 2 million dollars. I kind of liked it. I thought long and hard about going to the doctor and just toughed stuff out most of the time. The one time I did go for a fever it cost me about $800 out of pocket. Ouch! But…I was paying $100 per month for health care, which isn’t bad considering some of the rates out there.
