Over at Oliver Cameron Publishing, created by our very own David Pearce, they’re working on a new book entitled Wedding Photography: A Guide to Making Money. The book won’t be out for another three months or so, but David has posted an excerpt up on the Oliver Cameron site.
Here’s a quick excerpt from their excerpt design to entice you to go to their site and look at the article that is designed to entice you to buy the book (and if it is anything like the first couple, it will be well worth it).
Article 115
I believe that it is very important to spend the first 1 hour of every day marketing before you do anything else. Do this for long enough and it becomes a habit. Your business is dependent on getting paying clients and they have to be able to find you which is why marketing is so important. It is a vast area and one that we go into depth about in the next few articles covering vital information on SEO, creating adverts that work, getting referrals, making your website work for you in addition to some great ideas on where to market yourself.

Books make it all sound so easy…”just do it”…well yeah, you and every Joe Blow out there competing for the same clients. The wedding photography profession is so over saturated with photographers that clients can just pick and choose and hold out for the lowest meat ball price. Unless one is set up with venues that religiously refer you and you are on an island with them, being out in the great ocean with everyone else is at best treading for clients.
Yes, but if your competitors read this book & get good advice that you don’t have…..

I’m no Mark Twain myself. But after read these first two sentences, I feel maybe Oliver could hire a writer to help out? Maybe one with an advanced degree in grammar?

“Making money is not only about what you charge and how much work you get – it is about how long you actually work for. You are the businesses biggest asset and it’s most expensive expense, as you have to be paid and preferably well.”
Another book that is going to be bought and let down thousands of people. Lets face it there is no magic solution to photography and your business. Somethings work for some people, somethings don’t. Learn what does and use it!
I have always spoken my mind on DWF and I will do so here as well.
I find it quite amazing that people can dismiss and put down a book that has not even been released or seen by these people. Quite extraordinary.
Let me address your comments -:
Geo – if that is your genuine belief then there is not a lot I can do to help you. If you attract clients that hold out for the lowest price then you have your marketing all wrong. If you learnt to Market properly and to the right demographic then you would not have this problem. Clearly you need to have talent to charge a good price and take you away from the price shoppers in the first place.
Scott. You are quite right. I should have run this past my editors first but did not.
Lane – I do not understand how you can say people will be let down by this book when you have not read it. That is like me saying do not book Lane Photography to shoot your kids as the images will be rubbish. I have never seen your work so there is no way I could possibly say this. How can you say this about my book? Please do explain as I would love to know, I have written about the principles I have learnt in general business as well as in wedding photography. I believe that for £9.95 you cannot possibly not learn something that is worthwhile for your business and help you make more money. NO where have I said become a millionaire. it is all about improving on what you already have.
You then go on to mention “learn what does and use it!” May I please ask how someone is supposed to learn something if not by educating themselves through books, forums or workshops? If there friends new then they would have asked them.
There is no magic solution you are right. We improve ourselves and our businesses through professional development and education. That is how to build a successful business. Or you can do it by guess work and trial and error.
This is actualy our 4th book and as far as I am aware we have not let anyone down with the previous 3. We have had nothing but positive reviews and countless emails of thanks for producing them and helping the readers. I hope that this books proves the same.
I’ve bought 2 of David’s previous books and plan to buy this one. I plan to keep learning. I think you guys are being too cynical.
Yes there is no magic bullet, but we *can* learn from others. If you’ve got your marketing & business sorted out, well good for you.
I’m open to new things or even seeing the business through new perspective.
Learning and improving and growing is definetely the passport to success. development in every aspect of your business is essential to prevent burnout and coasting at the very least. mr Pearce’s posing book is top notch and i see no reason to doubt his other publications
When is the book coming out? It says due February 2011 on Amazon and on the publishers site, but it’s now mid March and nothing has changed…
Any answers?
Approaching June……..
