Everybody wants their business to stand out, right? Correctly and appropriately “branding” your business can go a long way towards financial success, and your logo may well be the first impression of your company a potential client sees. In order to help you not fail quite so badly, Smashing Magazine has published 10 Common Mistakes in Logo Design. Check this out if you’re thinking about rebranding.
The best tip, in my opinion is the first: don’t do it yourself. Photographers whine like little girls when a bride opts to have a friend shoot pictures at her wedding. “Don’t they understand how important it is to hire a professional!?!?” Yet, photographers are too cheap to hire a pro to create their own brand identities, logos, and websites.
Check out this list and see how many of these mistakes apply to your company’s image. Then, hire a pro for a do-over. Assuming you can get a graphic designer to pull himself away from bong hits and hacky sack long enough to call you back.

This is totally true. When starting out we all think that we can just do it ourselves, save some money etc. That is not the truth at all and likelihood is that you will want something different in just a few months. I went down this road.
I initially did it myself, three different times within about a year or so. I then got a graphic designer to do it for me. I didn’t particularly love her style but she was alot less money and I did like some of her designs. Also a big mistake. Six months later, I knew my style and worked with wonderful Lisa Reichman of Luxecetera to achieve a really great brand vision!
There are lots of extremely talented designers out there, including the girls at Luxecetera (no they aren’t paying me for this!) and while they may be a bit more expensive, the final work is totally worth it. They work closely with you to create exactly what you want, often exceeding expectations (think 20 alterations on one business card graphic!).
We invest lots of money in equipment, when really we should be investing in the bit the client actually sees, your business presence.
