I do love me some TED. In the video above NYU prof Clay Shirky shows us exactly how Twitter, Facebook and Cellphones are changing the way information is being shared by all. I know, I know… you already knew that but it’s still a great talk worth watching.
These are pretty exciting times we’re living in and this video very clearly shows how the dissemination of information is changing the way everything on the internet interacts. As photographers we already know that these services are changing the way we can reach (and might I add maintain) clients. Already, I have past Brides and Grooms regularly commenting on my Facebook pages. There was a day when you shot a wedding and never heard from the Bride and Groom again. Social networking is now allowing us to build connections that could last a lifetime and require fairly little effort on our part as business people to maintain. It’s so freakin’ cool!
What do you think?

Facebook and/or Twitter brings to 90% of the photographer no business at all. If brides want to reach you, they still call or email.
After the wedding you ask for a little comment on your website and that’s it. Still mouth to mouth business is business Number 1.
If that was the case I would argue that 90% of those photographers are doing it wrong.
Facebook, when done properly, is word of mouth without requiring your client/friend to even open their mouth.
What with client photo tagging, fanpages and ads that tell friends of friends that their friend is your fan it’s utterly changed the face of word of mouth advertising over the past 2 years.
Mark, I think you are spot on. I believe any small business owner that isn’t on this “train” is missing out.
The leverage provided by Facebook, Twitter and blogging is game changing — as Clay Shirky highlighted on TED, “…the exposure becomes squared.”
The opportunity to move from 1:1 to a squared position is a paradigm shift that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Thanks for the post!
