Mac Fanboy
- An individual who goes beyond being an average Mac end user.
- An individual who is loyal to Apple even when they screw up. AKA obsession without question.
Now before you go all hater on me. I should point out that I’m bi. Bi OS that is, I have for at least the past 10 years always used both a Mac and a Windows machine on a daily basis. A position that I feel allows me to offer a unique perspective on the iCult and their followers.
iCult
Members of the church of Mac plan and simple. Think of it as the congregation, you know those people with Apple stickers in the car window and people who actually use the overpriced and under performing computer mice and keyboards designed by Apple just for the sake of aesthetics.
Mac Evangelist
First I should clarify that owning a Mac may make you an honorary member of the iCult but it doesn’t make you a Mac Evangelist. Evangelists are the vocal majority of the iCult. Taking every opportunity to tell you things like…
- If you had a mac that wouldn’t have happened.
- Mac’s don’t get viruses!
or my personal favorite answer to the which computer should I buy question.
- Get a Mac!
Notice they almost never offer up performance specs or details, they just say “Get a mac!”. It’s almost become a game to see who can say it first. I tend to ignore them like a Hare Krishna at the airport.
Mac Fanboy Extremists
Now this is where things get really interesting. Fanboy exteremists bring us so much blog fodder that they are had to ignore. For example:
The iToilet
Yup it’s real, built by Rival Toilets for Apple Fanboy exteremist Mike Jones! Does this mean that fanboys um err… stuff doesn’t stink?
The 3D Mock-up Fanboy
No doubt these fanboys have talent but are they putting it to good use? I mean how many hours does it take to invent your own absurd Apple product like the iThink. A macintosh computer which is embeded into your spinal cord complete with 3D renderings! By the way, if you just went “Wow, cool, I want one!” then you’re a fanboy.
But I must digress, the Mac Fanboy certainly is an entertaining subculture and I welcome them with open arms. I just question where their undying faith comes from. Is it born of the need to hate all things Windows? or does it stem from the need to believe in an underdog company that is out there “Fighting the good fight” against the man. Either way I find it interesting that so many artistic types are drawn to the cult of mac. Wonder why that is?

Hahaha! Definitely enjoyed this:)
Let me start by saying I AM a mac fanboy/evangelist or what other term you want to call me.
I agree that there are some extremes that mac folk will go to (i.e. the toilet? WTF) but it seems kind of harsh to dump on people that use macs just because they enjoy using the products.
I have been using macs since day one and will be the first to tell you that they have not always had the best of the best or made it easy for people to upgrade. That is just how it was. Why stick around then? Well.. it wasn’t broke and hence there was nothing to fix. Why not go to windows.. everyone else did? Simple.. windows just did not feel right.
I like to to get things done. I don’t want to worry about getting the latest this that or the other for my computer every 2 weeks when something new is out. I don’t want to worry if the virus definitions are up to date. I don’t want to be told (over and over and over) that I have unused icons on my desktop. I just want to get my stuff done and move on. These are the reasons I use a mac and ENJOY doing so. The hardware and the software just work, sometimes not perfectly but they work. When it comes down to it my “undying faith” comes from the fact that I am happy and comfortable using a system that just works.
As for the hardware… aesthetics is important. If the photographs you made looked like crap then no one would want them. If you showed up to shoot a wedding in a t-shirt and ratty shorts there would be lots of people second guessing you. Having hardware and software that work together is more important to me then worrying about which motherboard I have or if I can put neon inside the case. I just DON’T care. BTW.. the new Apple “Magic mouse” SUCKS!!!! But the “mighty mouse” is GREAT… just saying!
As for windows.. it has its place. I have Win 7 running side by side with Snow Leopard on my laptop. When I need it then I run it. Both serve a purpose and both have good and bad that go along with them.
Finally.. I am NOT trying to start a Mac VS PC thing here. Both are very capable of offering the end user the same experience. If something makes you happy then just use it.
