Let’s have a moment of silence for the Digital Rebel as the iPhone dethrones gives it an old fashioned back alley beatdown.

Seriously that’s a spike! Thanks to the LA Times for the super cool graphic btw. Personally I take a pile of snapshots with my iPhone 3G and while the camera is not the best it’s adequete for quick snaps of my kids on the go. Word on the street is that the iPhone 3Gs camera knocks the 3G firmly out of the park and this dramatic upswing could be in part to the new improved camera on the 3Gs. I also think, and the LA Times writer agrees, that the biggest reason for the jump is that they iPhone has changed the way people share photos.

iPhone users are notoriously heavy consumers of mobile Internet — in some cases, surpassing the amount of time they spend surfing the Web on their computers. That could mean they’re apt to share the photos they take on more websites, rather than suggest that the phone’s camera is supplanting more powerful devices.

Seriously if I could upload photos straight from my better quality point & shoot to the interwebs as I can with the iPhone I would be all over it in a heartbeat.
