Yeah I know, you read our article about Rick Astley taking over your iPhone and thought no way is that going to be me.  I hate Rick Astley dammit!

iphone worm

The first version of the worm as shown above did little more damage than making you look like a child of the 80’s but the latest version dubbed “DUH” is a bit more malicious. The DUH version is attempting to create an iPhone botnet (no need to look it up, it means they want to control a whole bunch of iPhones at one time) and it appears to be stealing information from the iPhones itself.

So what can you do to protect yourself? Two really simple things is my answer:

  1. Don’t hack your iPhone. :-)
  2. If you have hacked your iPhone you must change the default password.

Ok so how do you take care of step #2 you’re asking? Well it’s fairly simple if you understand command lines etc. After all, who doesn’t love a good command line in terminal now and then. These instructions assume you’ve installed Cydia during the jailbreaking process.

  1. Fire up Cydia on your phone.
  2. Find and install via Cydia the Mobile Terminal App (I’ll assume you have openSSH already installed)
  3. Open terminal on the iPhone
  4. Type “su root” and hit return
  5. Next enter “alpine” as your password and return again
  6. Type “passwd” and hit return
  7. Enter your new password then return twice
  8. Test the new password using SSH from your desktop PC

BTW, we take no responsibility should you brick your Phone. This is hacking people, you assume all risks. If all of that information above looks like I wrote it in a foreign language you probably should not have hacked your iPhone in the first place.
