Could it be? Could it really be? The iPhone might be coming to a CDMA network near you? The Wall Street Journal seems to think that the iPhone / AT&T dynasty is about to fall. Perhaps as early as September.
According to their article…
Apple Inc. plans to begin producing this year a new iPhone that could allow U.S. phone carriers other than AT&T Inc. to sell the iconic gadget, said people briefed by the company.
Also consider that a CDMA iPhone doesn’t necessarily limit Apple to a pact with Verizon though it’s a pretty obvious choice as the 2nd largest cellular provider in the US. Verizon, Sprint and even Virgin Mobile all use CDMA networks at this time.

I’ve been sitting on the sidelines for 5 years waiting for one of two things to happen:
1. A price drop in base data plans.
2. A reasonable unlimited data plan that lets me bundle into a family plans.
The $60/mo. unlimited that the 2G iPhone originally came out with almost made me bite, since my voice-only plan from VZW comes out to a ridiculous $52/mo. Then AT&T decided to subsidize the phone with the 3G upgrade, and all bets were off.
Whether VZW tries to truly compete with AT&T on their data plans is something i find extremely doubtful. They’ve had anything but reasonable data rates for some time, and were loathe to afford any other method for users to transfer media to their phone other than their network. That was one of their biggest problems with Apple’s proposal when Apple first went to them to support the handset. If they’ve finally succumbed to Apple having control of the handset design to be put on their network, maybe VZW has turned over a new leaf.
We’ll have to wait and see if they truly are the ‘angels’ you so desperately hope for.
