Solar powered laptop

Filed under “how will this work exactly” Spanish hardware and software company iUnika announced it’s new solar powered laptop.   The energy efficient models offer a low price point (around $220) and run on a Linux operating system.  While the 128 mb of ram and 8 inch screen don’t make them ideal for the wedding photographer, the idea of a laptop that you don’t need to plug in, in a business where everything is on location seems appealing…

Until you ask yourself how you feel about leaving your laptop in the sun long enough for it to charge.  Or perhaps consider how one will manage to view the monitor in light levels sufficient for operation.  The company’s name alone smacks of irony: iUnika.

There seems to be no word on US availability, so we leave it to the Europeans to let us know how this one works out.  In the meantime the author is considering a legal name change to iCarli.
