Spending two weeks on a personal vacation in Japan, I’m reminded of how important personal albums are. We spend all year, designing dozens of wedding and portrait albums for clients, but what do we do for ourselves?
As many know, I lived in Japan for 13 years, my wife is Japanese and my two boys were born here. I still have a very strong connection to my ‘second home.’ Before boarding United flight 885 to Osaka, I was looking through some of my old ‘photos of Japan.’ My love of photography began with street photography in the style of David Alan Harvey. Looking back at the hundreds of photos I have, I realized that I need to put these photos into print before the digital files are lost in the ever-growing stack of personal hard drives in my closet. I need to put together a personal album – Fundy’s Japan.
On this trip I’m taking some me time to complete some photos I’ve always wanted to take, but never had the time while working, taking the kids to the doctor and just the general life stuff that always gets in the way.
These are two shots taken yesterday at Nishiyama Koryuji on the island of Shikoku (where I spent my life in Japan). They work quite well as an album spread. I can’t wait to add them to my collection.
I think I’ll put together a quick iPhoto or Aperture book as a test run, then do a large Finao One with a cool metal etched cover.

It often takes a big change or adventure to get people to realize how quickly life is paced. Often, we forget ourselves in the middle of this crazy world. I have numerous albums with shot at home and they are always guest favourites. I leave them on my coffee table and people look at them and we just talk with a glass of wine. But the most enjoyable moment is when I sit down and look at the images. Not critique or analyze but just look and enjoy! Digital photography has changed our lives. I purchased a Voigtlander Bessa R3M this year with 2 lenses just to reunite with the love of film photography. The images, the style is totally different then in digital. We need to do personal things in life or we will forget what life is meant for!
I wish everyone to have an eye opener experience and take more time for them. When was the last time you actually did your passion (other then photography)?
