Spam is the abuse of electronic messaging systems (including most broadcast media, digital delivery systems) to send unsolicited bulk messages indiscriminately. While the most widely recognized form of spam is e-mail spam, the term is applied to similar abuses in other media: instant messaging spam, Usenet newsgroup spam, Web search engine spam, spam in blogs, wiki spam, online classified ads spam, mobile phone messaging spam,Internet forum spam, junk fax transmissions, social networking spam, and file sharing network spam. – wikipedia
Spam is something we all must deal with on a daily basis and sure we all know that there is not much we can do about the normal everyday 419 rich dead uncle in a foreign land variety. It’s generally best to just ignore those.
But what do you do when it’s a wedding vendor who is collecting your contact information online. Or worse using the name of another organization to try and entice you.
(spam email from memador albums sent to me)
Such is the case with Memador Albums. As you can clearly see in the two samples above they are using the DWF name (without our permission) in their email spam. What does Jeff Caplan, CEO of the Digital Wedding Forum have to say about this?
Some DWF members may have received spam from an album company called Memador.
I was personally surprised when I received an email from the company with a subject line of “Intro to the Digital Wedding Forum.” As the Founder of the DWF, I didn’t think I needed to be introduced!
I called the company’s US sales manager, Jay Kamentsky and asked how I came to be spammed. He told me that “it’s spam, and it’s not spam. We use computers to pull email addresses from photography websites, and then send out emails. Since the email addresses are already on websites, it’s not spam.”
They scan photographers’ websites for email addresses. They scan PPA’s website (if you’re on there, you’re fair game for unwelcome Memador spam.
Memador’s US Sales Manager confirmed that his computers suck all public-facing email addresses from the DWF, and from PPA’s referral site as well. He didn’t think there’s anything wrong with the practice.
I do.
When I demanded he cease using our name, he said the proper solution is to – wait for it — send Memador our entire DWF membership list (5,500 email addresses) which he promised to immediately blacklist. I’m not kidding. He really said that, via email.
The answer is “NO”.
I want to reassure DWF members, your email address is on the private side of the DWF, and is not accessible to the public. The only exception is if you’ve posted your own email address in the public DWF Buy/Sell Forum.
Draw your own conclusion about Memador, and their shifty business practices.. – Jeff
So what do you think, “Memador Albums” or “Memador Spammers”?

This makes me very sad. I use memador albums exclusively. I’ve always loved their customer service. But I don’t approve of these measures and it also says to me it’s a company that has to not be doing very well to do such desperate measures.
I also wondered if they needed clients so much why are they not attending PPE?
Offer a give away to collect names, but I do not go for spammers.
Looks like at PPE I’ll be taking a closer look at Album companies out there…. again! sheesh
So much for them getting a positive endorsement here…
They are very pusy and despite my telling them I wasn’t interested, it still took them a few months to stop calling me. Their product isn’t horrible – it just wasn’t for me. This occurred before I was even a member here, so I guess they are getting even more aggressive!
Pusy = pushy Loring?
They are doing the same thing sending out e-mails that also look like they are coming from my local affliate PPANJ… Does anyone actually buy anything from spam anymore? I wonder why they continue to do it.
I can’t believe that PPANJ would be happy about that.
I think it’s an important reminder to be smart about when you pass out your email. I have a email for posting when it is public/spammers like CL scammers and the like.
But a photography album company? Maybe they should be blacklisted.
@Mark – honest it was a sticky ‘h’ key – it wasn’t a Freudian slip!
