DWF – Let’s start off with a little bio, tell us a little bit about yourself.
SAM – I’m happy to admit that I’m known for my passion. I’m passionate about people and relationships, photography, teaching, and philanthropy.
In addition to being a photographer, one of my greatest pleasures is to teach other photographers new and exciting methods of the art of photography. I have been very blessed to teach photography around the world. I have met so many wonderful photographers that inspire me everyday. Meeting people that share the same passion for life is truly a blessing that I cherish.
Philanthropy is another of my passions. I’ve always believed in giving back, both to my immediate community and to my professional colleagues. Each year we conduct several portrait fundraisers to benefit charity. In 2005 I was honored to become a co-founding member of Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep, a non-profit organization that provides portraiture services to families whose babies will never leave the hospital. I am currently on the Board of Directors of the Professional Photographers of America and I hold the title of Print Master and Explorer of Light from Canon USA.
My images have been displayed in numerous magazines, public and professional buildings, billboards and showcased on television. I also share my abilities with the media when they are in need of professional expertise, and I have been featured on television and radio as a portrait photography expert. A frequent contributor to professional journals, my first book, Children’s Photography, released in the spring of 2008.
I hate writing all of that fluffy stuff, because the truth is, I am just grateful for the blessings that I have and I am humbled that I have lived such a rich life.
DWF – How did you become a photographer?
SAM -I have always had a camera. From the time I was 15, I would photograph my friends as we did crazy things. Eventually when I was 17 a friend let me borrow her 35mm camera and I photographed her kids. She loved them and told all her friends. I could not believe that people would actually pay to let me do something that I enjoyed so much.
DWF- Who or what inspires you as an artist?
SAM – My subjects inspire me everyday. Everyday I get to meet with people who are celebrating the very relationships that give their lives meaning. From their first baby, communion, senior portraits and even their weddings, I get to capture those moments and be a small part of their happiness. It is watching these moments happen that I am inspired to continue my work.
DWF- If we needed a photographer today why would we book you? What makes you unique?
SAM – I have deep passion for life and photography. Portrait photography is a personality-based business. People can sense my enthusiasm, and they are interested in working with someone who is very passionate about their work. I really love the people that I work for and they know that I am committed to being there through all of their important moments.
DWF- If you had to pick a favorite “Tool of the Trade” what would it be? and why?
SAM – The Canon 70-200 mm 2.8 lens is my favorite tool. It’s the most versatile catchall, do-anything lens available today.
DWF – How about some final words to live by?
SAM - Life really is about the journey and not the destination. It is the smallest things that we do, that sometimes mean the most. If you really think about the people that mean the most in your life, you understand that even though it sometimes hurts, every moment we have is a precious gift. Enjoy the moments my friends!
