Add photographers to the long line of people who have sued Google. A few days ago in New York Federal Court a class action lawsuit was filed by the following plantiffs against the search engine giant.

  • PPA (Professional Photographers of America)
  • NANPA (North American Nature Photography Association)
  • PACA (Picture Archive of America)
  • GAG (Graphic Artists Guild)
  • ASMP (American Society of Media Photographers)

I did find this mention of it on the PPA today blog and it reads pretty harsh…

Google has proven itself to be no friend to professional photographers, and Professional Photographers of America (PPA) along with four other associations has decided it is time to go to battle against the behemoth infringer. PPA joined four other photographic trade and visual arts associations in filing a class action copyright infringement suit against Google Inc. in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

This new suit deals with Google scanning books for use in their “Google Book Search” and comes about after ASMP was denied a request to join a class action suit filed by writers over the same project. Worth noting… that suit was settled for $125 million. I would imagine that Google might find this an uphill battle considering that precedent. What do you think?
