Red Cameras (who have more than once been accused of creating vaporware, but have created a major tidal shift in the video and film industry with their Red One) announced in October that the Epic-X Betas (code name Tattoo) would be shipping by the end of the year “Assuming no major drama.”
That optimistic estimate may slip to early next year. Red has announced that a manufacturing revision has pushed the timeframe back by “30 days”, though with no drop date on the Tattoo, Red watchers can only guess at the time frame.
Company head Jim Jannard recently posted this to the Red User Forum:
Since we are transparent… we have an ASIC issue. We have to do a “metal spin”, as apposed to a full re-spin, and it will set our program back about 30 days. I hate delays more than anyone, but we need to be open about the good news and the bad news.
What we are doing is something that no once else is doing… and it is difficult. We have had more than our share of luck… but reality has hit us.
The new 5K interchangeable system, which will shoot both 5K video as well as stills, has gotten a lot of buzz, though more from video shooters and high-end commercial photographers than from wedding photographers, most of whom will find the $28,000 price tag for the “Mysterium” brains of the camera cost prohibitive.
