A. “Hey, I’m interested in photography and would like to learn from you. Got any positions available?
B. “Hey, I’m a photographer, can I take you to Sushi?”
If you were the person being asked this question, which one would you go for? Well, unless the photographer being asked this has business coming out of his ears and dollars falling out of his pockets, the best bet is to go with the free fresh fish.
With the number of amateurs out there these days, it’s inevitable that studios have people knocking on their doors, seeking knowledge along w/ a piece of the pie (hungry yet?).
Possible Responses:
I have some photoshopping to get to
No thank you, you’re the 23rd person to contact me this week
And you are……?
My suggestion is to offer to take that photog you’ve been admiring out to lunch, or at least bring ‘em donuts. Chances are they’ll appreciate the gesture and you’ll stand out from the 101 other folks that are in the same position. People are more comfortable, especially in front of a good meal, and more importantly casual and candid about their endeavors . You’ll earn yourself at least an hour of good convo and that golden nugget of knowledge you’ve been seeking is in there somewhere.
Plus, you’ll be memorable.
So who knows, next time they’re short on help they just might remember that delicious maki roll you skillfully ordered and give you a call. Don’t look for a job, look for a relationship.
I suggest the Unagi.

Excellent post!! And if you are in the Fort Wayne, Indiana area, be aware that I will teach you everything I know, such as it is, in exchange for the crab tempura at Yokohama.
“Sure I’ll teach you. It’s $1500.00 per hour for my services.”
Great post! I am down with both donuts and sushi!
