Let’s face it SSD drives are the bomb but they are freakin expensive at this point. I mean I love me some tweaked out geeked out computer goodness as much as the next nerd but not for some of the obscene pricetags that are floating around the interwebs.
Good news is finally here. Another big name player, Western Digital, announced a new line of SSD Drives dubbed Silicon Edge Blue that come in 256, 128 and 64GB flavors.
These prices are retail so expect to find them cheaper online:
- $279 for a 64GB
- $529 for a 128GB
- $999 for a 256GB
Whoa, step back Mark, those are still expensive. Well yeah they are BUT…. (there is always a but) this means that there are more people selling more SSD drives and this will eventually lead to lower prices. I think we’ve finally reached critical pricing mass for the SSD drives. Give it another year or two and we’ll be at a “Reasonable” sticker price for these bad boys. I can’t wait!

My understanding is that the technology is also still not quite “plug n play”. I have read comments from more than one SSD owner that if you don’t like tweaking your computer, don’t get an SSD yet.
Probably when the prices have become reasonable they’ll also have become more user-friendly. (I hope, because I’ve heard they’re ridiculously fast for some things.)
Anyone hear about that earthquake in Taiwan? Since that’s where most of the manufacturing of memory takes place lately, prices may be bumped up by a shortage for a while. To reiterate the author’s comments, don’t hold your breath for cheap, spacious SSD storage.
