As I said in last week’s post, I my love of photography began with documentary street photography – simply stepping out into life, looking for stories to capture. At our last wedding, Focht and I were both shooting the speeches from different angles. The father of the groom started his speech. The mic, which the bride had chosen especially for the wedding gave the moment a throw-back feel to the glamour days of Hollywood. While shooting, I knew that the moment would lend itself to black and white. With my 70-200 2.8, I lined up with the father speaking to the rest of the family in the foreground and the bride and groom in the background. These moments always lend themselves to documentary photography. Knowing that, I stood and waited, snapping a photo every few moments. Through the viewfinder, I saw the bride and groom reach for each other. I knew this was the moment.

In this second photo, the groom was waiting patiently for the bride to come down. The bride was running close to an hour behind schedule, so the groom was getting antsy. He sat with his father, glancing up the staircase every few minutes. Just as he glanced up, this one time, his father caught him and gave a subtle grin.

In every wedding, I look for key images that will help tell the story for the wedding album. These key images are used as full page (or near full page images) with accent images completing the story. Without these key images, I find it difficult retell the day. As I am culling through a wedding, whenever I find one of these images, I tag it – knowing that I’ll return to it for the album.
