The UPS guy left me a surprise at the DWF office door today and it came in the shape of a Cotton Carrier camera carrying system. Being your average gear geek, I immediately ripped open the package and awed in all it’s new gear glory! My first impression…
I LIKE IT!
Fair enough you say but why do you like it?
- Like many photographers I know, I’ve got a bad back. By bad I mean I have had herniated and bulging discs in the past. The cotton carrier allowed me to distribute the weight of the camera across my upper body. Something anyone with a bad back will instantly appreciate.
- The build quality of the cotton carrier is exactly what you should expect in a high-end carrying system. The mesh back will allow it to breathe properly. There is some wicked strong Velcro on the chest harness and side holster which gives a feeling of security. Exactly what you want when you’re hanging a $5,000 paperweight on it.
- The camera “insert” clips are well made and installed easily. Their low profile was appreciated and the design allowed them to be slipped on and off of the harness easily.
- The center mount allowed me to wear a suit jacket and still have access to the carrier. Figuring of course that if I was wearing the jacket I’d be shooting so I would need access to the side holster anyway.
- Bonus the side holster can be used with my camera backpack or belt as well.
But enough of that pansy ass run around the office taking pictures stuff. We’ve decided that we are going to give the cotton carrier a real world test at WPPI. Our very own Timothy John will be putting the entire system to use in the field while shooting our next series of DWF University videos. After which, he’ll be giving us his thoughts on how well the system performed right here.

I like the spider holster better:

It gives you more of the Cowboy look, yours seems like a baby carrier system. That seems like the same clip used to hold a cell phone!! only bigger. I got 5k hanging off a bloated cell phone clip? no way!
Peace
Excellent review! I’ve had a Cotton Carrier now
for 5 months now and it is absolutely indispensable for my
portrait and wedding photography. In most situations, I’ll
have my Nikon D3x with a 70-200 VR and a D7oo on my holster
ready at all times – so way more than 5k of equipment here!
Sometimes I’ll even have a 2nd holster for a 3rd body on my waist belt – now talking about looking like a cowboy! The CC system is totally rock solid otherwise I wouldn’t be trusting my 10K of camera equipment with it.
@Alberto, you like that spider holster better?? really?? the camera swings back and forth and requires u to use a plate that looks like it would make it impossible to work with a tripod plate. it might seem to u like it’s the same clip as a cell phone case uses, but it seems to me that u may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer. If you’re looking for the cowboy look, broke back mountain isn’t anywhere to be found here. In short, I’m pretty sure ergonomics were the main goal with this design, not looking like some kind of ‘cowboy look’.
