Four years ago, there was a thread on DWF: 16 GB: Wow! How much is too much?
Two years ago, the thread asked: 64 GB CF Card. Would you?
This year, the discussion is around 128 GB compact flash cards. Back in January, Silicon Power announced its 400 X speed, 128 GB compact flash card.
Then a week or two ago, Pretec announced they were one-upping that, with 128GB cards that writes at 567X.
While neither of these cards is on the market yet, they will be hitting stores in the next few months, raising the question: how many photographic eggs are you willing to put in one Compact Flash basket?
The issue boils down to a couple basic arguments.”If a card goes,” says one side of the argument, “you don’t want all your images on it.”
“Yeah,” says the other side, “People worry about corrupt cards the same way they worry about plane crashes: they rarely happen, and it’s one of the safest way to travel.”
“But when they do fail, they go spectacularly.”
“Worrywart. Besides, you (or at least I) am more likely to lose all your images by losing a card physically than from a corruption.”
“But what if you drop your camera into the ocean? Or it gets stolen? Now having all your pictures on one card comes back to bite you in the tucus, even if you are using a dual slot camera.”
And so it goes. In the end, cards will keep getting bigger, and people will keep having the same discussions. Meanwhile file sizes also keep getting bigger (how many shots can you get onto that 1 GB card with your D3s anyway?) That 16 GB card people were so worried about four years ago? Cost $1049.99 at launch. These days you can find them for about $100.
For me, I don’t think that I would buy a 128 GB card right off the first run, even if I had the $700 to buy one right away. I’d rather stick to one or two iterations down, where they’ve most likely worked out all the kinks, and the price point has dropped down to something reasonable. So a 32 GB card is not out of the question, but 128? Far too rich for my blood and my modest budget.

I suspect people using a 5DMkII to shoot video will love these, though.
I would think you could put around 10 weddings on that card. Great for video though!
Can we all say: “BP Gulf Oil Well”. I’m still shooting with 2GB cards.
I could be off with my numbers, but a quick scan of speed tests done of CF cards a few months back at Tom’s Hardware, showed the 64gb sandisk a bunch slower than the 16′s (& 32′s?).
I have actually considered shelling out for a D3s just for the dual slot insurance. D300s has that, but crop frame.
a 32gb in each D700, don’t change them all day.
I had a 4gb card corrupt. Thing was filled with 12mp raw files from a friends wedding. Lost every image on that card. It sucked, and to this day I think my friends wife has never forgiven me. I won’t put more than 50 images on a card now, and I shoot with 2 cameras around my neck, that way if I do lose a card, I won’t be missing a huge gap in the day.
