Understanding how colors behave is critical to evoke atmosphere and mood.
Photographers often talk about color temperature. In Visual Thinking, I am talking about the elements of color that we are looking at and seeing within the frame.
(might I suggest hitting the HD button and watching this one full screen)
I usually have limited control over color that exists on location. What the chosen event colors are; the floral arrangements, the linens, the bridesmaids dresses, the colored up-lights the coordinator has put in the reception, etc. What I can control is understanding how colors function in relationship to other colors – how they behave differently in different situations. This knowledge helps get the image I want.
-
- warm colors advance
- cool colors recede
- same color appears differently in different contexts
Post some links to your favorite images that successfully use color! Have you worked with viewer perception to trick the eye into seeing certain shapes as smaller or larger? Have you found ways to keep color consistency (like in bridesmaids’ dresses or bouquets) across the different color temperatures during the course of the day? Are some weddings or events all about the color – and others where the color palette is secondary?

I just love the colors between purple and pink. With good light they give to the picture an unique atmopsphere, confortable and romantic.
This is an example of what I mean: http://www.studioboda.com/reportaje/#/boda/fotos/1preboda/preboda02.jpg

These are so interesting and informational. Thank you for sharing them Allana!
Great post. Every photograph boils down to three elements: Color, light (quality & direction) and composition.
Thank you for reminding us about one of those elements. It’s not about equipment, it’s about what we see and choose to record.
These colors are just great! Thanks for sharing the images!
