Brought to our attention by the National Post, the city of Toronto digitally added an African-Canadian gentleman to a photo of a family of otherwise racially ambiguous origin for the cover of its “Fun Guide” to make the city seem more “inclusive.” The original stock photo image and the new and improved cover can be seen below.

“You won’t find a more inclusive organization than us,” said Kevin Sack, Toronto’s director of strategic communications. Even if they have to fake it!
I’m not sure whether we should be more insulted by the failed attempt at faking “diversity” or the miserably poor photoshop work. Also, couldn’t they have found a better stock image of a smiling African-Canadian guy to graft on there? Where’s that guy looking, anyway?

haha! this would have been a good article in the onion, if it wasn’t actually true…
What drives me crazy about this stuff is that people are willing to turn out a crappy looking piece because they’re too lazy to look for another photo on iStock or (God forbid) actually shoot a photo to fit their needs.
I guarantee what happened is that they were shown a proof with the original photo and then wanted a mixed family but instead of doing another iStock search they grabbed the first headshot they found and dropped it in.
For those of us who take pride in the quality of their printed work this just makes us cringe.
BTW: I just did a search for “mixed family” on iStock and there were 137 pages of results, and how do I know that photo’s from iStock? It comes up on the first page, I’ll bet they didn’t even look at any options on page 2. Lazy designer.
That’s the publisher’s brother-in-law who is launching a modeling career.
I’m amazed anyone thought this was newsworthy. It’s as common a practice as blowing your nose–they just did a bad job at it. Would it have received any attention if they had inserted an Asian guy? Or a white guy? Or a purple guy?
everyone udjust theeir freak-out meters to zero…its a made up article…aka…its not true, which is lso the reason they did it so poorly…cant anyone spot a joke anymore???
