So what do photographers think of the iPad? Does it have potential? Is it all bark and no bite? We asked our @DWF_Forum twitter followers to share their opinions and this is what they had to say… (BTW check back as we’ll updating the replies)
- iamcaseyg I think it would be great to use it for a nice mobile/electronic picture portfolio!
- Robinson_Studio the iPad will boost the importance of video and challenge imagemakers to create better imagery.
- Getcolormanaged Nice to show of portfolio or take notes at a meeting. Maybe nice to use shooting tethered in the future. More gadget then tool.
- chriswanamaker I don’t think the IPad is anything more than a supersized IPod. I think Apple missed the ball on this one …
- SurrealImageStd – iPad could make for pretty cool mobile proof presentation. Fastest way to have images in a bride’s hands, cooler than a laptop
- Ryan_Thrower I think it could be a great tool for a portfolio. iCal and Mail are a bonus w/ your portfolio being all in 1 device.
- jmwphoto re: iPad. it’s just a bit data enabled iPod. It would be nice for client meetings and image demos.
- timskrastins iPad for photographers- what? No card reader? No USB port to add one? Could have been perfect field viewing device!
- joelllacar Im impressed! I can imagine showing our images 2 clients, slideshows w music, videos etc w/o bulk.Ill wait 4 real world usage tho.
- andreaLG an intriguing tool to allow me to share my photos with friends and family easily. Lots of potential when working with clients.
- RichardPress re: iPad. I can’t see a use for it. It’s too big and too small at the same time. Rather have a Macbook & iPhone.
- alexrodriguez Game changer for portable portfolios!
- timskrastins dear Apple: why no optional stylus for iPad? How cool would Photoshop for iPad be?
- Dinofa #iPad would be a perfect solution for my 7yr old. Modern combination of everything she wants- Movies, web, music, games
- Colorspro If only it had a CF card OR USB port… Pro Photographers would love it more
- mrkon if Adobe writes Lightroom for the iPad, I’m in. Tethering, processing, reviewing. I love the fact that it uses an IPS display.
- erikpatton I feel like a lot of people are missing the face that the #iPad is a content viewing device and not a traditional computer.
- avantdp show casing portfolios to potential client would be great on the #ipad considering its dimension and weight.
Apple are you listening? Is this thing on? Well maybe we haven’t turned an ear at Apple Computer headquarters but until we do you can tell every photographer the DWF knows by posting your thoughts on the iPad on twitter (remember to tag @dwf_forum) or in the comments section below.
Oh and Apple! if you are listening send me an iPad so I can tell you and my faithful throngs of readers hands on what a professional photographer really thinks of the iPad. Pretty please with sugar on top.

I think some of you need to look at the bigger picture. Why add all of the extra’s into a device- usb ports etc if not everyone needs it, plus driving up cost. Be open minded here, I am certain accessories like card readers and the like will be coming down the line- via “30 Pin Connector”
That’s exactly what they have coming. http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/content_page.asp?cid=7-10047-10471
remember guys and girls, the profit is in the extra gadgets..:)
… and the apps, and the monthly service fees, and the next generations of the device (once they’ve got you hooked). When I worked in a bike shop, we would tell customers (who were buying bikes) upfront that they should set aside 20-30% of their budget for “extras” (clothing, helmet, toolkit, etc.).
