Sean Cayton is a professional wedding photographer. I know because he has a billboard. There are other ways to tell and he lays them out on Black Star.
A lot of us are cranky these days. Maybe it is because creative people are just cranky, or maybe it is because the wedding photography market is an elevator and we are all crammed in here stepping on each others toes.
That said I really try to be positive and I realize that some up and coming photographers are creative individuals trying to break out in a market at an unfortunate time (or a great time depending on how you look at it). Read Sean’s piece, then figure out what it is that makes you a pro. What sets you apart from the hobbyists that are “paying for their toys?” It will give you something to do while you wait for the phone to ring, besides just thinking about what makes the other guy (or girl) a hack.

Thanks for the last paragraph — I’m not a full-time pro, and can’t afford to ditch my day job just so I can “be in the club” (of “full-time pros”). We all took different paths getting to this profession (or semi-profession), and we shouldn’t criticize others for taking a different path. It seems more productive to criticize poor practices, mindsets, etc. so that we can all be better for our clients. Even the “hobbyist paying for his toys” can adopt Sean’s mindset and raise their level of expertise and service.
Each photographer stands on their own. Generalities are useless.
