In one of those breathtaking media events, sure to put the iPad announcement to shame, that other Cupertino-based organization, the Compact Flash Association, announced the new Compact Flash 5 standard.

Sure, it’s scintillating news, full of bits like:

Update ATA References to ATA-6 & ATA-8/ACS-2
Access to advancements in the ATA standard

Whew. I bet the sheer amount of interest in that nearly crashed Twitter….

However, one spec stands head and shoulders above the rest.

48 bit Addressing (Mandatory)

What does that mean?

Capacity points beyond current limitation of 137GB (up to 144PB) & more efficient data transfer (32MB per transfer versus 128K per transfer)

Um. Where I come from, PB is a type of sandwich, not a memory measurement. But PB stands for Petabyte. So your compact flash card will be able to hold the equivalent of 144,000 1 TB hard drives.

To put that another way, the lowly compact Flash Card has the potential to hold the entire collected written works of mankind from the beginning of history, and still have enough space for 850 hours of High Def video (that’s just about every episode of the Simpsons). On one card.

SD cards, on the other hand, currently top out at a theoretical 2 TB. I’m just sayin’.

Not enough geek-speak? Download their press release and bask in all its nerdy glory!
