First, let me state that I’m a huge Leica fan. My Grandfather, a well-known photographer, educator and mentor started off selling Leica cameras. They were always the pride of his gearkit, and as a small child and even a young adult I wasn’t allowed anywhere near them.
You could say that some of my first impressions of the Leica were that it was a godly expensive precision tool, not suitable to be handled by children. Perhaps this is why Leica’s brand is burnished in the back of my mind as a premier image making tool. Who else made an f/0.8 lens?
But their recent foray into digital with the M8 kinda sorta stank. It seems Leica’s transition into digital has been hallmarked by uber-pricey equipment that performs below industry standards.
More details have surfaced on the S2, and it’s got a price tag well over $20,000. With so many other heavy hitters in medium format digital, I hope Leica outdoes themselves this time around.
